Exam Barring

Exam Barring - information for students

The School reserves the right to withdraw students from examinations if they have failed to meet the minimum requirement for class attendance and coursework submission.

Attendance at classes is compulsory and is recorded on LSE for You. Any student who is absent on two consecutive occasions or is regularly absent without good reason will be automatically reported to their academic adviser. Students must submit all required course work on time, whether it is summative course work (ie work that counts towards the final mark) or formative course work (that does not count towards the final mark). Permission to sit an examination may be withdrawn from students who regularly miss classes and/or do not provide required course work.

(The Code of Good Practice for Undergraduate Programmes; Section 3.5 – 3.7)

A review of attendance and coursework submission ordinarily takes place in the latter weeks of Michaelmas term. If you appear to be failing to meet the minimum requirement you will be contacted by your Academic Adviser (AA) or Departmental Tutor (DT) at this time. If you  are unable to account for their absences, or provide evidence in supporting reasons for non-attendance you are likely to receive a Provisional Exam Bar (PEB) on some or all of your courses.

Exam bars can be imposed by the AA, DT or the Dean of Undergraduate Studies.

Exam bars can be lifted by the DT, except for those imposed by the Dean. The Dean can lift any bar.

PEBs are set with conditions attached. Typical conditions are:

  • Attendance at all remaining Michaelmas term classes without exception
  • 100% attendance at all Lent term classes, unless exceptional circumstances are shown
  • Submission of all outstanding coursework

If you successfully meet the conditions the PEB will be removed.

If you fail to meet the conditions your AA or DT can set further conditions or enforce the exam bar.

An Enforced Exam Bar (EEB) will prevent you from sitting all exams to which the bar applies. The exam attempt will count, you will be awarded a zero-absence-fail as your result, and if you have been barred in more than one unit you will consequently be unable to progress into the following year of your studies.

If  you were to fail to progress whilst carrying exam bars you would be required to apply for repeat teaching the following academic year.

For further information or advice on exam bars please speak to your department or contact ssc.exambarring@lse.ac.uk
