If you want to request to transfer into a different degree programme, you must complete the Programme Transfer form, providing an explanation of why you wish to change programme. You need to obtain the necessary approval as indicated on the form, and submit the form to Student Services. Forms are available on this web page and from Student Services.
Details about the process of applying to transfer programmes are outlined below for undergraduate and graduate students.
You may request to change your programme of study at any time during your studies, but changes of programme are made at the School's discretion. Permission will depend on a number of factors, which include:
the number of students already registered for a particular degree;
the qualifications you held before you registered at the School;
the admission quota for each degree; and
whether the courses that you are taking (or have already taken) fit into the regulations of the degree to which you wish to transfer.
Please note that the School will not usually approve a transfer if it means that you will not progress from one year to another in the expected way.
Please note that some Departments have a deadline or a cap on numbers. Students who have already completed one or two years of a degree programme will need to meet the relevant department's transfer conditions - please see this page for details of these conditions.
After you have completed the Programme Transfer form, your next step is to get it completed and signed by both the departmental tutor of the degree programme you are leaving and the departmental tutor of the programme you hope to join.
The application will be passed to the Undergraduate Studies Subcommittee (USSC) for consideration. Until formal approval is given, you will remain registered on your current programme and will be expected to comply with all its requirements, including attendance at all classes and attempting all assessments.
After the SSC receives the form back from the USSC we will inform you of the final decision and, if your application is successful, we will process your degree transfer at the appropriate point in the academic cycle. You will receive an email notification within 5 working days from that date (except during the main registration period in September/October when it may take longer). Once a transfer is approved, for details about changing courses, please see the Course Change pages.
You can normally request to change your programme of study only during the first three weeks of the Michaelmas term. Any changes outside of this period will only be permitted in exceptional circumstances.
After you have completed the Programme Transfer form, your next step is to get it completed and signed by the programme director of the programme you are leaving and the programme director of the programme you wish to join.
If your application is successful, you will receive an email confirmation of your transfer within 5 working days (except during the main registration period in September/October, when it may take longer). Once a transfer is approved, for details about changing courses, please see the Course Change pages.
If you currently hold a Tier 4 visa, permission to transfer into to a new programme will also be dependent on meeting the UK Government's immigration laws. It may also have an impact on the length or conditions of your visa, your ability to extend your visa in the UK and the time you have remaining for further study under the time limitations of your Tier 4 leave. If you are considering a transfer to a new programme, you must seek immigration advice to see if you are affected.
