Students wanting to transfer degree programmes must complete the Programme Transfer form, providing an explanation of why you wish to change programme, obtain the necessary approval as indicated on the form, and submit the form to Student Services. Forms are available on this web page and from Student Services.
Details about the process of applying to transfer programmes are outlined below for undergraduate and graduate students. Please note that General Course students starting from 2013/14 onwards will not be permitted to transfer to an undergraduate degree.
Undergraduate students can request to change their programme of study at any time during their studies, but changes of programme are made at the School's discretion. Permission will depend on a number of factors, which include:
the number of students already registered for a particular degree;
your own qualifications;
the admission quota for each degree; and
whether the courses that you are taking (or have already taken) fit into the regulations of the degree to which you wish to transfer.
Please note that some Departments have a deadline or a cap on numbers. Students who have already completed one or two years of a degree programme will need to meet the relevant department's degree transfer conditions.
After you have completed the Programme Transfer form, it should also be completed and signed by both the departmental tutor of the degree programme you are leaving and the departmental tutor of the programme you hope to join.
The application will be passed to the Undergraduate Studies Subcommittee (USSC) for consideration. Until formal approval is given, you will remain registered on your current programme and will be expected to comply with all its requirements, including attendance at all classes.
After the form returns from the USSC we will inform you of the final decision and, if your application is successful, we will process your degree transfer. You will receive an email notification within 5 working days from that date (except during the main registration period in September/October when it may take longer). Once a transfer is approved, for details about changing courses, please see the Course Change pages.
Postgraduate students can normally request to change their programme of study only during the first three weeks of the Michaelmas term. Any changes outside of this period will only be permitted in exceptional circumstances.
After you have completed the Programme Transfer form , it should be completed and signed by the programme director of the programme you are leaving and the programme director of the programme you wish to join.
If your application is successful, you will receive an email confirmation of your transfer within 5 working days (except during the main registration period in September/October, when it may take longer). Once a transfer is approved, for details about changing courses, please see the Course Change pages.
For further advice about changing your degree programme, please use the Registry web queries form.
If you currently hold a Tier 4 visa, transferring to a new programme may have an impact on the length or conditions of your visa. If you transfer to a programme that has an earlier or later end date, or to a lower level programme, the School is required to inform the UK Border Agency and this may affect your immigration rights and those of your dependants. Please contact the International Student Immigration Service for advice and guidance.
