House rules, facilities and arrangements at Sidney Webb House

To help you make the most of your stay, we have collated information specific to Sidney Webb House. This includes local additions to the common house rules and information about hall specific facilities and services.

Bike storage

There is bike storage available at SWH. You must register your bike at reception when you get your bike and remove it from the residence when you leave. We strongly recommend that you insure your bike against theft and vandalism as the standard insurance policy does not provide cover against the theft or damage of bicycles. Please contact your reception team for further details

Common room – “The Atlas”

The Atlas Common Room has lounge sofas as well as tables and chairs and has a large screen TV with DVD & Wii, a pool table, table football and table tennis as well as a selection of vending machines. The common room is used by all residents as a social space and is the scene for the majority of social activities in the hall.

Residents are responsible for the cleanliness of their bedroom, shower room and kitchen, though cleaning staff will deep clean each kitchen once a fortnight.

Computer room / IT services

The LSE Information Management and Technology department (IMT) is responsible for the SWH computer suite, which is located between A block and B block. There are 15 terminals and printing is available, though you need to top up your printing card at school or online. Also see: LSE Wallet

Safety and security

Sidney Webb House is situated in the trendy area of Borough, just south of London Bridge, however as with any major city (particularly when in busy ‘tourist’ areas) you need to take sensible precautions such as sticking to well-lit main roads at night, not having valuables “on show” and not using any underpasses – always stay above ground.

However we rarely have any security issues here and the residence itself is very secure so you shouldn’t have any problems if you follow basic safety principles.

Sidney Webb House is a non-smoking residence and heavy fines will be implemented for anyone caught smoking indoors or in the courtyard area.

The designated smoking area is outside the front gates.

There are no storage facilities at Sidney Webb House. For a list of local self-storage companies, see: Life around Sidney Webb House

Subwardens are LSE postgraduate students who live in the residence and are employed by the school to be on duty each evening. They deal with any out-of-hours issues, welfare concerns and maintain good order within the residence. If you would like to speak to a subwarden, you can contact reception and ask to speak to the duty subwarden. For contact details, visit: Who's who at Sidney Webb House
