Who is who at Lilian Knowles House

Lilian Knowles has a great team of people all of who are dedicated to making your stay as enjoyable, safe and comfortable as possible. The majority of the staff are employees of Sanctuary Students but there is also an LSE member of staff (the Warden) to provide a link back to the School. The student committee makes a great addition to the team.

Senior residents and Warden

The student welfare team is made up of four senior residents (employed by Sanctuary Students) and the Warden.

Michael Blackwell 

Michael Blackwell (Warden)

Michael Blackwell is an assistant professor in the LSE Department of Law. He lives at the residence and provides a link back to the School. His role is to oversee the welfare of students living at Lilian Knowles. Where necessary, he also deals with serious disciplinary matters. He works closely with both the student hall committee and the Sanctuary team to make sure your time at Lilian Knowles is safe, comfortable and enjoyable.

Senior residents
The senior residents are on duty overnight and at the weekends. They are also LSE Students and all live in the building, so they have a great understanding of life at LSE and Lilian Knowles. Their key role is to be a first point of contact outside of office hours. Please do not hesitate to get in touch if you need assistance.

Management and administration

Contract manager
The contract manager works for Sanctuary Students and overseas the running of two Halls of Residence so his time is split between us and Alliance House.

Service delivery manager
The service delivery manager works for Sanctuary Students and oversees the day to day management of the building and it's services. S/he manages the housekeeping, reception and senior resident teams.

The receptionists are working for Sanctuary Students, and can be found at the front desk during office hours. Contact them about fees, guest beds, maintenance issues or general queries.

IT advisor

IT advisor, Ajay Govi
Ajay is the Lilian Knowles IT advisor and works for IT Services at LSE. He is responsible for maintaining the computer room and helping out with IT queries from residents. He runs surgeries in the computer room or can be contacted by e-mail.

The Lilian Knowles Handyman is looking after the fabric of the building and dealing with faults and breakages. If you have a maintenance issue please report it to reception.

The Housekeeping Team do a great job in keeping the building clean and tidy and they can often be seen around the building, especially in the morning. If you have any queries about Housekeeping, contact reception.

Contract security
Sanctuary Students have contracted security to provide overnight cover on the front desk. The security guards are able to provide most of the daytime services but cannot handle payments. Security ensure that the building remains safe so please be co-operative if they ask for ID.

Student social committee

  • All members of the committee are full time students living at Lilian Knowles.
  • They are elected at the beginning of each academic year and voluntarily dedicate their time to help make life at Lilian Knowles better. 
  • More details about the committee are displayed on their notice-board near the common room.

President, Kevin Almerini 

The president leads the committee, takes an overview of all activities, chairs all meetings and liaises between the residents, LSE, Sanctuary Students and the Student’s Union. Together with the treasurer the president also authorises any expenditure. The president also represents the residence at the termly Residences User Group (RUG) meetings and provides support to the social officer for events.

Secretary, Cassidy Pearl

The secretaty is responsible for the general administration of the committee. This includes tasks such as minute taking and committee’s communications.

Treasurer,  Amy Goldsworthy

The treasurer takes responsibility for the committee funds. The funds are made up of the termly common room fee that you pay with your rent. The treasurer maintains income and expenditure accounts, operates the bank account and reimburses expenses. The treasurer also provides key support to the social officer for events.

Wellbeing officer,  Brooklyn Tchozewski

The wellbeing officer acts as a wellbeing representative for members of the Lilian Knowles House community and promotes an inclusive, supportive and respectful sense of community within the hall. They help to make sure everyone feels at home, especially international students.  The wellbeing officer is responsible for running ‘well-being’ events within the residence such as weekly yoga sessions and sports activities. (The role of the wellbeing officer is not to deal with residents’ specific welfare problems and concerns: students with such concerns should contact the LSE school representative, Michael Blackwell)

Social officer,  Junfeng Li

The social officer is responsible for planning, organising and running events throughout the year. The type of events vary from boat parties on the Thames to movie nights in the common room. The social officer will receive support from the treasurer, president and vice president in both organising and manning events. Funding for the events comes from the £10 common room fee.

Environment and sustainability officer (ESO), Maneesha Chhikara

The ESO is responsible for creating awareness of environmental and sustainability initiatives within the residence – working with both the LSE and Sanctuary. The ESO will also work to ensure that all committee activities are as sustainable as possible.  They are also responsible for helping to execute programmes regarding energy consumption reduction, promoting recycling and environmentally friendly living.
