Project Update - Summer 2010

The New Students' Centre, to be built on the current St Philips site, will house the Students' Union - including venue, pub, learning cafe, exercise studio, roof terrace coffee/juice bar, fitness centre, media centre, activities space, societies activities, advice and representation centres; Inter Faith Prayer centre; Residences; Accommodation; Sales and Marketing Office; and LSE Careers' Service.

Following intensive consultation with the Students' Union, Chaplaincy, Residences, Careers Services and the Estates Division, the project team successfully completed RIBA Stage C (outline design) in December 2009, and Stage D (Scheme Design) in May . The Project Team are now underway with Stage E (detailed design) and working towards completing this stage at the middle of October 2010. We are pleased to report that the cost plan indicates the project is still on budget and the programme is being closely followed.

The planning application was made at the end of February 2010. Stage 1 of the contractor appointment process commenced in mid February with the advertisement for interested contractors, who were required to complete a prequalification questionnaire. These prequalification submissions were assessed by the Project team, and the best six were shortlisted. Stage I tender documents were issued, and prior to their submission, members of the Project Team visited a representative working site offered by each of the tenderers, followed by a workshop and question/answer session. Interviews will be held at the beginning of July, and Stage 1 appointments will be made following these, whereby the contractor will provide the team with valuable buildability expertise. Demolition of the old St Philips Building will commence in January 2011. Construction work will commence in July 2011. The project is due for completion in December 2012.

The School's environmental aspiration for this building is a BREEAM (Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method) rating of 'Outstanding' with a contractual requirement of 'Excellent'.
