Project Update - Autumn 2010

The Project Team are now nearing completion of Stage E (detailed design) which is scheduled for completion at the middle of October this year.  Following intensive consultation with the Students' Union, Chaplaincy, Residences, Careers Services and the Estates Division, the project team successfully completed RIBA Stage D (scheme design) in May 2010, and are pleased to report that the cost plan indicates the project is still on budget.

The planning application was made at the end of February 2010, and the application received approval on 30 September 2010.  Stage 1 of the contractor appointment process has continued, with initial interviews held at the beginning of July, and secondary interviews of the final two contender contractors by a Senior LSE Management Panel scheduled for 1 November. Stage 1 appointments will be made following these, whereby the contractor will provide the team with valuable buildability expertise.  Demolition of the old St Philips Building will commence in May 2011. Construction work will commence in August/September 2011.  The project is now due for completion in March 2013.

The School's environmental aspiration for this building is a BREEAM (Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method) rating of 'Outstanding' with a contractual requirement of 'Excellent'.

The New Students' Centre, to be built on the current St Philips site, will house the Students' Union - including venue, pub, learning cafe, exercise studio, roof terrace coffee/juice bar, fitness centre, media centre, activities space, societies activities, advice and representation centres; Inter Faith Prayer centre; Residences; Accommodation; Sales and Marketing Office; and LSE Careers' Service.
