Project vision and objectives

Vision statement

LSE seeks to have the 'best students' building in the UK', with a BREEAM 'Excellent' rating and the innovative use of design and technology: the School is looking for a world class students' centre – an exemplar. The School wishes the new Students' Centre to be described as:

adaptable / ambitious / award winning / beautiful / distinctive /
fun / innovative / inspirational / international / original /
participatory / recognisable / stimulating / sustainable / unique

As the New Academic Building has set a benchmark for 'excellence' for other LSE construction and refurbishment projects, the new Students' Centre must have the highest design quality, environmental sustainability and procurement approach; creating a contemporary, innovative and exciting student environment.

With the expansion of student numbers and the demand for students services rising simultaneously, the Students' Union would like to expand the current space allocation for all its existing facilities, incorporate new facilities and house the whole of the Students' Union under one roof. By doing this through the New Students' Centre the Students' Union aims to achieve cross-promotion of its services, and to creating a hub for student activities that provides a sense of ownership and identity, reduces mobility problems and facilitates an efficient and enjoyable service for students. In addition, the School wishes to see other School-run student-facing services accommodated within the New Student Centre.

The new building will be judged a success if it:

  • Is on time and on budget
  • Not just accommodates but significantly improves the School's student facilities
  • Adds significant value to the student experience at LSE and attracts world class students to the School
  • Gets the right balance between first cost and occupancy costs by spending money to best long term effect
  • Brings together varied and conflicting accommodation requirements in a mutually supportive way, using the available space efficiently and effectively
  • Can absorb rapid occupancy fluctuations over the academic year and longer term growth in student numbers
  • Enhances the overall reputation of LSE as a world class institution with world class facilities
  • Enables the highest standards of life cycle maintenance, access, energy efficiency and environmental sustainability
  • Employs innovative design schemes that enable multiple uses of space and maximise full potential of the site
  • Creates a student hub in the heart of LSE's campus which is recognised nationally and internationally as a building of the highest architectural merit.
