LSE is seeking to transform the student social experience by building the best students' centre in the world. Housing the Students' Union, the site will become a student hub at the heart of LSE's campus and should add significant value to the student experience at LSE.
The New Students' Centre will include a number of student-facing services such as the Students' Union reception; the advice and representation centre; sabbatical and general manager's offices; a learning space; a pub; large venue spaces; a media centre; a fitness centre, which will include a gym and dance studio; an interfaith prayer centre; and offices dealing with residences, accommodation, sales and marketing together with the LSE Careers Service.
The New Academic Building, which opened in November 2008, has set a benchmark for excellence that should continue with the Students' Centre. LSE is looking for the highest design quality, environmental sustainability and to create an exciting student environment.
With the expansion of student numbers and the demand for student services rising simultaneously, the Students' Union would like to expand the current space allocation for all its existing facilities while also incorporating new facilities, with both projects housed under one roof. The New Students' Centre must:
Improve the School's student facilities
Add significant value to the student experience at LSE
Create a student hub in the heart of LSE's campus which is recognised nationally and internationally as a building of the highest architectural merit
Enable the highest standards of life cycle maintenance, access, energy efficiency and environmental sustainability
Employ innovative design schemes that enable multiple uses of space and maximise the full potential of the site.
