Each specific skill-session is only 30 minutes long, so you can easily fit them into your busy day.

Thursday 6th October, 11:00-12:00
In this 50-minute talk, Gemma Stansfield and Heather Dawson will give an overview of five key skills to ensure a smooth transition to university: managing your workload and meeting deadlines, finding information on your own, reading academic texts, writing essays and referencing. In general, taking responsibility for your own learning – which includes asking for help when you need it!

Tuesday 4th October, 13:30-14:00
At school, most teachers decide what you’ll read and often provide these readings for you. For many courses at university, you’re expected to find texts and other materials on your own. Come to this short 30-minute talk, led by Dimity Flanagan, to learn what is expected and how to search for and find what you need.

Step Up! Writing essays
Wednesday 5th October, 13:30-14:00
In your first year as an undergraduate at LSE, you’ll be met with a lot of new and exciting challenges. One key challenge in making the transition from school to university is writing essays. In this 30-minute session, there will be time for your questions and comments, and Gemma Stansfield will give an overview of what is expected of university essays, how to get off to a good start on your first essays, and where you can find help with essay-writing.

Step Up! Reading independently
Thursday 6th October, 13:30-14:00
In your first year as an undergraduate at LSE, you’ll be met with a lot of new and exciting challenges. One key challenge in making the transition from school to university is reading. “Reading” might seem straightforward, but at university you’ll be faced with more reading than you’re accustomed to and you’ll be expected to search for and read relevant texts independently. In this 30-minute session, there will be time for your questions and comments, and Helen Green will give an overview of ways to approach your reading and where you can find help.

Step Up! Managing your own time
Wednesday 12th October, 13:30-14:00
In your first year as an undergraduate at LSE, you’ll be met with a lot of new and exciting challenges. One big challenge in making the transition from school to university is taking responsibility for managing your time on your own. In this 30-minute session, Gemma Stansfield will discuss ways to plan and prioritise your various activities and how to create a time-management approach that suits you.

Step Up! Citing and referencing
Thursday 13th October, 13:30-14:00
For university-level work, you’ll need to (1) USE others’ ideas in your explanations and arguments and (2) IDENTIFY whose ideas they are, according to specific academic conventions. In this quick 30-minute talk, Maria Bell, will help you discover the academic practices of citing and referencing that you’ll need for your essays and coursework.
