LSE LIFE hosts a number of drop-in sessions that cover both academic and personal support from a wide variety of our partners.
There is no need to book or to make an appointment for these specialised drop-in sessions. Just come during the indicated times/days. The sessions are located in various areas in the LSE LIFE space, so check with the LSE LIFE reception to find where the session you’re looking for is taking place.
Academic English Language Hour
The Academic English Language Hour focuses on a range of useful language for various aspects of academic English, from how you can refer to yourself in an essay to useful language that you can use to build an argument in a seminar. EAP teachers from the Language Centre will be available to answer questions and guide you, and there will be a task each week that you can do individually in order to consolidate your knowledge and understanding of the week’s theme. Although you will not be able to discuss your own work in detail during the hour, the teachers will make suggestions about where you can get further help.
The themes of each week are as follows:
-
Week 1: Introduction to Language Centre
-
Week 2: How to refer to yourself in essays, use of the first person
-
Week 3: Passive or active voice - which to use and when
-
Week 4: What makes an effective paragraph
-
Week 5: Academic presentations - useful language
-
Week 6: Writing introductions and conclusions in academic essays
-
Week 7: Informal/formal language in academic writing
-
Week 8: Seminars - useful language for building an argument
-
Week 9: Proofreading your work - common errors
-
Week 10: Integrating sources into your work - reporting verbs and nominalisation
Academic English Language Hour sessions take place every weekday 12:00-13:00 in LSE LIFE Workspace 3.

Group work support
So, you’d like to get a new study group together? Or you already have a study group, but you don’t seem to be making much progress together? Perhaps you have a project or case study that requires you to work in a group or a team?
There are many advantages to working in a group, but it doesn’t necessarily come easily or naturally to everyone. During the Group Work Support drop-in sessions, you’ll be able to come along on your own to get some advice, or meet up with your group to get on with your work. If your group would like some support with considering and making decisions about how you will work, getting started, roles and responsibilities, monitoring progress, or addressing difficulties, an LSE LIFE adviser will be on hand in the work space to help you. You can ask questions, test out ideas, or ask for advice on how to make the most of your group.
Group work support sessions take place on Monday 17:00-19:00 and Wednesday 10:00-12:00 in LSE LIFE Workspace 1.
