External funding

Whilst the School runs a very comprehensive programme of in-house options, there are occasionally situations where staff need access to more specialised provision for which there is not the demand and/or expertise at LSE. There is a limited annual budget to support this type of development and applications are dealt with on a first-come, first-served basis.

Please note: This scheme does not deal with conference fees applications - there are dealt with by the Planning and Corporate Policy Division.

Before submitting your application, please read the information below as the following rules apply:

Submitting your application

  1. Applicants will normally be expected to have completed their review period before receiving financial support.
  2. We cannot honour any commitments made in advance of our agreeing to an application.
  3. Incomplete applications will not be considered.
  4. If we do fund you to pursue a course, we reserve the right to cite your name as a beneficiary for marketing/publicity purposes.

Your department's commitment

  • Local Departments/Divisions must contribute at least 50% of the cost of the course as a representation of departmental/divisional commitment to essential learning and development.
  • We would not expect individual staff to contribute personally to essential work-based development.

  • All applications must be actively endorsed by the local manager as an essential work requirement, and managers will be expected to support candidates, monitor progress and provide feedback to HR.

Our commitment to you

  1. HR will cap its contributions to 50% of the course fees, to a maximum of £1,500 per year.
  2. It should be noted that we cannot guarantee funding for any other year apart from the year in which the application is approved (the current year).
  3. We only fund the learning cost itself and are unable to fund any travel, out-of-pocket expenses, book costs etc.
  4. The School will not make payments for repeats of the same year of the course.
  5. If you voluntarily leave LSE up to two years after the completion of this training, the School can claw pack a pro-rata amount of its costs.
  6.

    Please note

    • All issues relating to time off, study leave and release are negotiable locally, since no School policy can meaningfully address the wide range of staff learning needs and individual work patterns.
    • HR can provide study skills and support interventions e.g. where candidates are experiencing difficulties e.g. coping with reading, producing academic written work etc.
    • Now that you have considered the guidance, please download an External Funding Form.
