Drone attacks - should Britain make its policy public?

If the UK intend to engage in future targeted killings through the use of drones, this should be done with the greatest possible transparency,” argued Devika Hovell, an international law specialist professor at the London School of Economics. The UK should take the lead of the US government and publish a detailed policy as to the criteria it will apply in deciding when it will engage in drone strikes,” she told The Times. “While we cannot expect the UK government to release confidential intelligence information, it does not service the British public or the protective structures of international law to stonewall reasonable public inquiry.”

Political scientist Simon Hix has been announced as the inaugural Harold Laski Chair at the London School of Economics. LSE created the chair to commemorate its former professor and one of Britain’s most prominent socialists. Professor Hix, an LSE alumnus and employee for nearly two decades, has authored more than 50 articles in top international journals in political science and written seven books. He said: “It is a great honour to hold the chair. I have tried throughout my academic career to make my teaching and research relevant to politics and policymakers, and I hope that I can continue to do so in this new role, keeping alive Laski’s legacy at LSE.”

London house prices push out the people the city needs most

Global Development Professionals Network Foreign aid: which countries are the most generous?

Although foreign aid is a contentious issue, researchers at the London School of Economics say the public seems to be happy with the UK’s spending on foreign aid. However, surveys released in June show people generally are in favour of giving aid out of a national interest rather than need. So perhaps we’re not as altruistic as we thought.
