This battle will define us. We must protect our children from austerity
The Guardian, 26/05/2015, p.29, Aditya Chakrabortty
The landmark study of the social effects of David Cameron’s austerity was produced at the start of this year by a team of academics led by Professor John Hills at the London School of Economics. They found that the biggest victims of the spending cuts made since 2010 were children, and their parents: “Tax-benefit reforms hit families with children under five harder than any other household type. Those with a baby were especially affected.”

Cambridge tops the table yet again the fifth year in a row
The Guardian, 26/05/2015, p.33, Alice Woolley
The only university to fall out of the top 10 was the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), which made room for the University of Exeter. LSE fell to 13th place after being in the top three just two years ago, dragged down by a falling student satisfaction score. It wasn’t the only elite London institution to lose ground - University College London (UCL) and Imperial also slipped slightly down the table.

MY LAST child is about [...]
The Mail on Sunday, 24/05/2015, p.31, Rachel Johnson
Academics from the LSE have concluded what we all knew – that children do better when parted from them. As someone who needs the Freedom app (which allows you to concentrate by turning off your internet) to write a sentence, I know how distracting and even dangerous tech can be. Mobiles should be handed in – like guns in the US – at the school gates.

So he was very pleased about that. After a part-time master's in development and human rights at the London School of Economics, I decided not to work for a charity, but to start my own.

The borders are closing, the banks are in retreat. Is globalisation dead?
The Observer, 24/05/2015, p.42, Heather Stewart
In Europe, it has been migration flows - a different aspect of global economic integration - that have caused controversy. Swati Dhingra, of the London School of Economics, insists there is little evidence that migration lowers domestic wages. "It has very little impact," she says. "It's really one of the most misun-derstood issues.

Criminal bankers have brazenly milked the system. Let's change it
The Observer, 24/05/2015, p.38, Will Hutton
+Minouche Shafik, deputy governor of the Bank of England, expressed her horror at the casual “misconduct” among traders and the language they used to justify what they did in a speech to the London School of Economics last autumn. (Shafik is in charge of the fair and effective market review that will propose changes to the foreign exchange markets.) She conceded that no one can talk any more of a few bad apples – the barrel is rotten.

The Times, 23/05/2015, p.17, Philippe Naughton
"I'll add organic veg boxes to my list of nonmainstream political communications platforms," Charlie Beckett, professor of media at the London School of Economics, said. "There are channels for politics and veg boxes isn't one of them."

Why democratic elections are always flawed
Financial Times, 23/05/2015, p.45, Timharford
Critics of the British voting system do have a point. An analysis by Jack Blumenau and Simon Hix of the London School of Economics suggests that the disparity between votes cast and seats won has been widening for many decades, the consequence of the large number of votes now cast for smaller parties.

The Island: London Mapped by Stephen Walter
The Guardian, 23/05/2015, p.8, David Shariatmadari
Politically, though, independence is still a pipe dream. London hasn't even managed to wrest much fiscal autonomy from Whitehall: as Tony Travers, director of the LSE's London research centre has calculated, only 7% of tax paid by Londoners is retained by the city's government. In New York the figure is 50%. But who knows?

Legal experts call for greater scrutiny of surveillance laws
The Guardian.com (Web), 26/05/2015, Alex Hern
The letter’s 38 signatories, led by LSE law professor Andrew Murray and University of East Anglia lecturer in IT law Paul Bernal, call on the new government “to ensure that any changes in the law, and especially any expansions of power, are fully and transparently vetted by parliament, and open to consultation from the public and all relevant stakeholders”.

Draghi and Fischer reject claim central banks are too politicised
FT.com (Web), 23/05/2015, Unattributed
Mr Draghi’s defence of the central bank came after Paul De Grauwe, an academic at the London School of Economics, challenged his calls for structural reforms earlier in the week. Mr De Grauwe said central banks’ push for governments to take steps that removed people’s job protection would expose monetary policy makers to criticism over their independence to set interest rates.

Several economists challenged Draghi's pressure on governments, saying non-elected central bankers had no business making political proposals. Paul De Grauwe from the London School of Economics — a former member of the Belgian parliament — said the central bank put its legitimacy at risk. He said restrictions on layoffs existed "because people want them."

Isis claims suicide bombing of Shia mosque in Saudi Arabia

FT.com (Web), 22/05/2015, Unattributed
Toby Dodge, director of the Middle East centre at the London School of Economics, noted that Isis has called for attacks on Shia in Saudi Arabia. “This shows the increasing regional reach of Isis propaganda and the great fear is that, as in Afghanistan, Syria and Iraq conflicts will create groups of alumni going home,” he said. “Isis is trailblazing new jihadist violence that is explicitly sectarian, attacking Shia as a tool to foment instability.”
