Being German, Becoming Muslim: Race, Religion, and Conversion in the New Europe, by Esra Özyürek
Times Higher Education, 19/03/15
The author, a political anthropologist now based at the London School of Economics, spent three and a half years studying German converts to Islam. Of Turkish ancestry, Özyürek describes herself as a non-practising “cultural Muslim” who is able to relate to a wide variety of German Muslims. The result of her research is a fascinating exploration of the dynamics of Islam in contemporary Germany, seen through the prism of its capital, Berlin.

The country’s parliament is expected to approve a major new law on higher education, which is designed to give greater autonomy to universities and help them to diversify their sources of revenue. The draft law is based on a White Paper produced by a special commission headed by Arjan Gjonca, associate professor in demography at the London School of Economics. However, student groups have protested against the planned hike in tuition fees and the introduction of student loans.

Times Higher Education, 19/03/15
With that site and its continuing £1 billion redevelopment of its Strand campus, is King’s seeking to steal a march on its neighbours, the London of School of Economics and University College London? Both are forging ahead with campus redevelopments: the LSE, which opened its £24 million award-winning Saw Swee Hock Student Centre last year, is to build a new 12-storey social sciences centre at a cost of £90 million, while UCL is pushing ahead with plans for a second campus in Stratford, East London.

BBC (Web), 18/03/2015, Unattributed
Research by the Centre for Economic Performance at the LSE emphasises that more investment is needed in not just capital but innovation that can raise productivity. They suggest policies to improve firms' access to finance, information, and expertise. Like others, they are not opposed to some industrial policy. That's where a weak sterling could help.
