Can Churchill's grandson save Serco - and is it worth saving ?
The Guardian (Main), 02/07/2015, p.31, Sam Knight
The rise of modern government outsourcing has its origins in business theory. In 1937, Ronald Coase, a young left-leaning lecturer at the London School of Economics, published a short paper called The Theory of the Firm, in which he considered why companies contracted out some of their functions, but did others in-house. “Why is not all production carried on by one big firm?” he asked.

International New York Times (Main), 02/07/2015, p.20, Unattributed
But what about the robotic arms in industrial use? In the 17 advanced economies studied by Georg Graetz of Uppsala University and Guy Michaels of London School of Economics, there were 1.5 robots for every 1 million hours of human work in 2007, up from 0.6 in 1993.

The Times (Main), 02/07/2015, p.13, Howard Davies
Sir Howard, 64, had to step down as a director of the London School of Economics in 2011after concern about its links with Libya. He said that his decision to accept £300,000 for research from a foundation run by Colonel Gaddafi’s son, Saif, had backfired.

Unlikely hero
Daily Mail (Main), 02/07/2015, p.73, Alex Brummer
ONE has to hand it to Sir Howard Davies. When he was ejected from the London School of Economics in 2011, over the Libyan love affair, he looked to be down and out.

Davies: I chose Heathrow because it offers strongest benefits for UK economy
City AM (Main), 02/07/2015, p.16, Michael Bow
HEATHROW'S dominant position for UK freight traffic, focus on long haul flights and better domestic transport links were the decisive factors underpinning Sir Howard Davies' decision. The former London School of Economics director said Heathrow expansion would boost the productivity of the UK economy more than Gatwick expansion and offered better strategic benefits.

Rainbows Pakistan gets flustered over Facebook's gay rights meme
The Guardian.com (Web), 01/07/2015, Jon Boone
Emrys Schoemaker, a researcher from the London School of Economics conducting field research on internet use in Pakistan, said a growing number of poorer people are using Facebook for the first time, as telecom companies offer free access to the site. “A lot of people don’t know what the flag stands for,” he said. “One day labourer said he felt tricked after liking a friend’s rainbow profile picture and later discovering it was for gay marriage.”
