Axed staff rehired by councils in GBP5bn spree
The Times, 14/01/2015, p.1, Jill Sherman; alice Udale-Smith
Tony Travers, local government expert at the London School of Economics, said that too many jobs were cut too quickly in the search for early big savings and councils had found that they could not provide their services.
Shark versus toaster - which is biggest killer?
The Guardian, 14/01/2015, p.32, Unattributed
Paul Mason (G2, 12 January) seems to believe that it was the French population who resisted and defeated the Nazis. Perhaps he should start reading books on history as well as economics.

Blame the Green Belt for Britain's dire housing crisis: Reform is long overdue
City AM, 14/01/2015, p.18, Ben Southwood
THE UK, and particularly London, is in the midst of what should be seen as a housing crisis. According to LSE professor Paul Cheshire, new build houses are about 40 per cent bigger in the Netherlands and 38 per cent bigger in Germany than they are in England. And yet housing goes for 45 per cent less per square metre in the Netherlands and, in Germany, prices did not rise throughout the entire 1971 to 2002 period.

We may be Charlie but our children are not
The Times, 14/01/2015, p.27, Alice Thomson
University campuses are even more politically correct about race and religion. No university magazine would have published cartoons depicting Muhammad before last week. Ils ne sont pas Charlie. When members of the LSE’s atheist, secularist and humanist society wore T-shirts featuring images from Jesus and Mo, an online comic, they were told they had to cover up or be removed from the freshers’ week fair. The university later apologised.

Are men natural born criminals? The prison numbers don't lie
The Daily Telegraph (Web), 13/01/2015, Jessica Abrahams
Professor Frances Heidensohn, a criminologist at the London School of Economics, describes the gender crime gap as “such a robust and long-established finding… [that] it’s not like other findings”.
“Certainly since industrialisation [and the availability of reliable data]... you have a very consistent, established finding that women are the minority of offenders, they don't commit such serious crime, they don't do it so often, and their criminal careers are shorter and less professional,” she tells me. “There's a general assumption that it must be a sociologically-based difference.”
