A modern New Deal could help share the fruits of prosperity
Financial Times, 13/01/2015, p.12, Unattributed
Sir, Paul Marshall says that the plutocratic variety of capitalism represented by America and Britain comes not from tendencies inherent in capitalism but from the failure of their political systems to curb the growth of monopoly and privilege (Comment, January 9). The plutocratic variety could be moved towards a more decent variety by tax measures to restrain windfall gains in income and wealth, and more equal access to education.these lines would be more likely if private donations to election campaigns were subject to tighter limits.
Letter by Robert H Wade, Professor of Political Economy and Development, Department of International Development, LSE
