Evening Standard, 14/01/2014, p.22, Nicholas Cecil

NHS care at home for elderly and disabled quietly slashed by a third
Telegraph (Web), 14/01/2014, John Bingham
The squeeze in overall numbers receiving care in England comes at a time when the numbers of older people has been growing almost twice as fast as the general population. The study led by academics at the academics at the London School of Economics (LSE) exposes the scale of rationing now being applied to help with basic tasks such as washing or dressing. It concludes that the contraction in the care system in the past five years alone is “unprecedented” and warns that further reductions are likely.

Education in brief: the disappearing headteacher and other mysteries
guardian.co.uk (Web), 14/01/2014, Warwick Mansell
Meanwhile, the DfE document still quotes approvingly from the 2010 report by Stephen Machin and James Vernoit from the London School of Economics, which highlighted improvements in academies opened under Labour, even after Machin has called on ministers to stop using it in reference to academies under this government. We wonder what kind of mark students would receive if they used research findings in this way.
