Technology and the minimum wage: A big rise could harm the lowest skilled

Businesses may get their offices cleaned less regularly and families might decide to substitute fastfood for supermarket frozen meals. In 2009, LSE academic Jonathan Wadsworth found that prices in "minimum wage sectors" - notably fast foods, canteen meals, hotel services, and domestic services - rose significantly faster than prices in non-minimum wage sectors after 1997.

Recovery accelerates in recession-hit Spain

Bankia, the nationalised savings bank that emerged as the symbol of the Spanish financial crisis, revealed last week that it had raised €1bn by issuing senior unsecured bonds, citing "strong demand". Luis Garicano at the London School of Economics argues the surge in investor appetite for assets from Spain and other countries on the eurozone periphery is "probably an excessive reaction".

Met claims of students' violence are 'blown out of the water' by pictures

Scotland Yard has agreed to pay Mr Kumar £20,000 in damages after he launched legal action for wrongful arrest, false imprisonment, assault and malicious prosecution. Mr Kumar, who was at the LSE at the time of the incident in June 2011, but is now studying for a PhD at Oxford, today spoke of his relief at being cleared.

Climate change kills more women than men

According to a study conducted in 2006 by the London School of Economics, 4 605 disasters in 141 countries showed that climate change related causalities were higher among women than among men.
This is at least in countries with a high level of discrimination against women which resulted in women not being able to move freely without a male escort.
