Technology and the minimum wage: A big rise could harm the lowest skilled

City AM, 14/01/2014, p.18, Ryan Bourne
Businesses may get their offices cleaned less regularly and families might decide to substitute fastfood for supermarket frozen meals. In 2009, LSE academic Jonathan Wadsworth found that prices in "minimum wage sectors" - notably fast foods, canteen meals, hotel services, and domestic services - rose significantly faster than prices in non-minimum wage sectors after 1997.

Economies of evidence
The Guardian, 14/01/2014, p.37, Unattributed
Meanwhile, the DfE document still quotes approvingly from the 2010 report by Stephen Machin and James Vernoit from the London School of Economics, which highlighted improvements in academies opened under Labour, even after Machin has called on ministers to stop using it in reference to academies under this government.

Home-care cuts freeze out a third more elderly people
The Daily Telegraph, 14/01/2014, p.10, John Bingham
The "unprecedented" squeeze comes as the number of older people has been growing almost twice as fast as the general population. The research, led by academics from the London School of Economics, exposes the scale of rationing being applied in England for assistance with basic tasks such as washing or dressing. They warn that further reductions are likely.

Britain's Poles are paying their way
International New York Times, 14/01/2014, p.6, A.m. Bakalar
People from the European Economic Area also pay about 34 percent more in taxes than they receive in benefits and have made a staggering net contribution of £25 billion ($41 billion) to Britain's public finances. Data provided by the London School of Economics has also revealed that ''immigrants are younger and better educated than their U.K.-born counterparts.''

Recovery accelerates in recession-hit Spain
Financial Times, 14/01/2014, p.6, Tobias Buck
Bankia, the nationalised savings bank that emerged as the symbol of the Spanish financial crisis, revealed last week that it had raised €1bn by issuing senior unsecured bonds, citing "strong demand". Luis Garicano at the London School of Economics argues the surge in investor appetite for assets from Spain and other countries on the eurozone periphery is "probably an excessive reaction".

Climate change kills more women than men
Swazi Observer, 14/01/14, Baphelele Kunene
According to a study conducted in 2006 by the London School of Economics, 4 605 disasters in 141 countries showed that climate change related causalities were higher among women than among men.
This is at least in countries with a high level of discrimination against women which resulted in women not being able to move freely without a male escort.

Video: Cases against two student protesters dropped after footage shows 'shocking' inconsistencies in police officers' account of events
The Independent (Web), 13/01/2014, Unattributed
The incidents happened at a protest at London’s School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) during a talk by education minister David Willetts in June 2011. Former LSE student Ashok Kumar, 29, had been invited to interview Mr Willetts at the event. However, instead he found himself being arrested, strip-searched, and fingerprinted after he tried to intervene in a dispute between a teenage student filming police and PC Paul McAuslan.

UK fracking frenzy could breach emissions targets
New Scientist, 13/01/14, Andy Coghlan
Others say it could help reduce emissions overall, provided the shale gas replaces coal currently used to generate energy. "In principle, if it helps with displacement of coal it could be helpful," says Bob Ward of the London School of Economics. Ward points out that per kilowatt-hour of electricity generated, shale gas produces less than half the emissions of coal.
