School place lotteries are on the rise
The Times, 27/02/2014, p.4, Greg Hurst
Academics from the London School of Economics found that the most common way that popular schools allocated places remained proximity to the school, either by catchment area or the distance between the school and the child’s home. Anne West, director of education research at LSE, said: “Banding could have the greatest effect on creating balanced intakes in areas where schools are popular and rolls are rising.”

More schools using lotteries to get a 'balanced intake'
Independent, 27/02/2014, Richard Garner
A growing number of academies and free schools are resorting to lotteries for places to determine admissions, says a report out today. The report, compiled by the London School of Economics for the education charity The Sutton Trust, shows that ballots and banding arrangements are becoming more popular with schools, in an attempt to stop places at good schools being snapped up by middle class parents who can afford expensive homes nearby.

Should the government hold auctions for UK visas? | Head to head
guardian.co.uk (Web), 26/02/2014, Unattributed
