Salary fears put courses in peril
The Times, 25/09/2013, p.1, John O'leary
Cambridge is top in more than a dozen subjects, while Oxford leads in eight. But nine other universities head at least one of the arts and social sciences tables. The London School of Economics shares the leadership in social policy with Leeds, for example, while Durham tops the history table and Manchester does the same in music. Warwick tops two tables: American studies and communication and media studies.
There's much more to life than being top of the class
The Daily Telegraph, 25/09/2013, p.30, Anna Maxted
With a sharp yank on the tail of every Tiger parent, researchers at the London School of Economics claimed this week that children might do better at a “worse school” than an academic one. Far from encouraging less intelligent pupils to achieve, being surrounded by ferociously intellectual classmates can destroy their confidence - whereas being top of the year in a school with lower standards can boost self-esteem and performance.

Luxury vessels prove their worth
Financial Times, 25/09/2013, p.2, Don Hoyt Gorman
A report last year by the Superyacht Intelligence Agency, which tracks the superyacht market, found that in 2010 - by all accounts a quiet year - €13.76bn was generated in the superyacht industry supply chain through sales, wages, expenditure and charter revenue, with a further €10.24bn generated indirectly including €4.3bn spent ashore and more than €1.6bn on crew jobs. The London School of Economics has also noted that employment in the superyacht industry has risen 10 per cent in the past five years.

Reuters UK (Web), 24/09/2013, Samia Nakhoul
"Assad's game plan is obviously to survive beyond everything else, but that survival will mean keeping Russia on his side, giving up the majority of his stocks of weapons of mass destruction, stopping American use of force and keeping the international community fractured and indeed to show that the opposition is not united enough to take power," says Toby Dodge, a Middle East expert at the London School of Economics.
