I love my friends more than my man
Daily Mail, 16/09/2013, p.44, Liz Hoggard
Recently, researchers at the London School of Economics, who had spent three years recording the ebb and flow of 50,000 people’s moods, revealed that most were far happier when with their friends than they were with their partners. In fact, the LSE research suggests that only the company of work colleagues and clients depresses people more than those supposed to be their nearest and dearest.

Britain has a drinking problem, and it needs help
The Sunday Telegraph, 15/09/2013, p.35, Unattributed
Small steps, but they require politicians to back them. Recently a young Greek studying at the LSE told me the story of his first Friday night here, when he asked a British student what he planned to do for the evening.

HS2 will clog up the rail system, warns freight expert
The Sunday Telegraph, 15/09/2013, p.1, Andrew Gilligan
Henry Overman, professor of economic geography at the London School of Economics, described the KPMG report as “technically wrong” in parts of analysis and “possibly out by orders of magnitude” in its results. “I can imagine why the Government rushed this report out but it would appear to add very little, if anything, to the debate,” he said.

Obama's big Fed dilemma
The Sunday Telegraph, 15/09/2013, p.6, Katherine Rushton
The 67-year-old arrived at the Fed nearly two decades ago, after a PhD at Yale and stints teaching at the London School of Economics and Harvard. She quickly gained a reputation for being approachable in the hierarchical central bank, where she often joined rank-and-file staff in the canteen. She was also known as a tough taskmaster with a doggedly scholarly approach.

The Mail on Sunday, 15/09/2013, p.13, Unattributed
Another assault was mounted by Bob Ward, spokesman for the Grantham Institute for Climate Change at the London School of Economics. Mr Ward tweeted that the article was ‘error-strewn’. The eminent US expert Professor Judith Curry, who unlike Mr Ward is a climate scientist with a long list of peer-reviewed publications to her name, disagreed. On her blog Climate Etc she defended The Mail on Sunday, saying the article contained ‘good material’, and issued a tweet which challenged Mr Ward to say what these ‘errors’ were.

How we all went Dutch
Financial Times, 14/09/2013, p.5, Simon Kuper
They haven’t been effective. In 1998 the United Nations general assembly held a special session under the slogan, “A drug-free world. We can do it!” Since then global drugs consumption has soared. Meanwhile the “war on drugs”, launched by Richard Nixon, just keeps wreaking devastation. John Collins, an expert on drugs policy at the London School of Economics, cites a few examples: packed US prisons, Russia’s HIV epidemic, and 40 years of Latin American drugs violence.

What’s the use?
The Economist, 13/09/2013, Unattributed
George MacKerron and Susana Mourato from University College London and the London School of Economics recently looked at the relationship between happiness and nature. They found that people are happier in all outdoor environments (except in fog or rain) than they are indoors. What makes them happiest is taking exercise or bird-watching by the sea or on a mountain with someone they like. Those seeking to cheer themselves up should avoid bare inland areas, suburbia and children.
