I'd offer my opinion about our feudal society, but I'm only a humble Dent
The Independent, 31/10/2013, p.11, Grace Dent
Occasionally, a piece of research appears that – while being wholly irritating – does at least brings readers the comfort of knowing that the grubby fact was acknowledged. It transpires, according to recent LSE research, that the same elite surnames have dominated the rolls of Cambridge and Oxford since as far back as the Norman Conquest. Old aristocratic names like Darcy, Percy, Mandeville and Montgomery go back 27 generations at the universities.

You don't need a posh name at uni, but it helps
The Guardian, 31/10/2013, p.2, David Mckie
Celebration time for such Berkeleys, Darcys and Talbots who aspire to an Oxbridge education: new research from the LSE finds that Norman names such as these remain over-represented on the student rolls at Oxford and Cambridge, 1,000 years after they were imported by a conquering elite. No such encouragement, though, for people called Boorman or Ledwell who, the study shows, have failed to reap the benefits of social mobility. Their families, poor 150 years ago, are still likely to be found outside the ranks of the wealthy.

Meritocracy in Britain? Pig swill!
i (The paper for today), 31/10/2013, p.16, Grace Dent
The research was carried out by Dr Neil Cummins and Professor Gregory Clark at the LSE, who believe that English social mobility is not much better than it was in medieval times – and that social status is even more inheritable than height. Dr Cummins said: “Just take the names of the Normans who conquered England nearly 1,000 years ago. Surnames such as Baskerville, Darcy, Mandeville and Montgomery are still over-represented at Oxbridge and also among elite occupations such as medicine, law and politics.

Pressure points: Government-commissioned researchers leaned on by state
Times Higher Education, 31/10/2013, p.6
Researchers working on government-commissioned projects have reported feeling pressured into making their findings chime with Whitehall’s political objectives. A report by researchers at the London School of Economics – based on a survey of 205 who worked on such projects between 2005 and 2011 – found “sufficient evidence” to suggest that governments lean on academics in these scenarios.

Rich-poor divide ‘wider than 50 years ago’
Times Higher Education, 31/10/2013, p.16
Increasing the number of poorer students in higher education has not proved to be the “great social leveller” that it was expected to be in the Robbins era. That was the argument set out by Anna Vignoles, professor of education at the University of Cambridge, at a conference to mark the 50th anniversary of the Robbins report held at the London School of Economics on 22 October. Lord Robbins was head of the economics department at the LSE at the time his report was published.

Milestone: Ucca creation the true turning point
Times Higher Education, 31/10/2013, p.17
Speaking at a conference on the 50th anniversary of the publication of Lord Robbins’ report on higher education, the universities and science minister said the start of the Universities’ Central Council on Admissions in 1961 was the turning point for the UK’s higher education system, rather than the much-lauded report by the London School of Economics director two years later.

An academic at the London School of Economics has pioneered a form of “guerrilla lecture” he describes as “the most interesting thing I have done in 30 years as a teacher”. The rumours started on Twitter with a mysterious exchange on the subject between Conor Gearty, professor of human rights law, and the LSE’s director, Craig Calhoun.

The state of the Union addressed
Times Higher Education, 31/10/2013, p.54
Sociologists have paid less attention to the European Union than other social scientists, for understandable reasons (they have much else to do). Interestingly, two of them who have made significant contributions on the subject have been directors of the London School of Economics: Ralf Dahrendorf, after his spell as a European commissioner, and Anthony Giddens, on his way to becoming a doughty proponent of the European cause in the House of Lords.

DJ-ing and being an all-rounder could be Just what they want
The Times, 31/10/2013, p.8, Grania Langdon-Down
He had graduated with a law degree from the London School of Economics at 21 but his “glorified hobby” of DJing at small parties while he was studying turned into a multimillion-pound career as a DJ, Radio 1 presenter, record producer, promoter, music journalist and agent. “I was lucky enough to be one of the first generation of DJs for whom it could be a career, but becoming a lawyer was always in the back of my mind,” he says. “But, being an ‘older’ candidate — I hate that expression — I had to find out whether people would be interested in me.”

Turning the heat up on PM’s fuel poverty claims ? Fact Check
Channel 4 News (Web), 31/10/2013, Unattributed
In March, Professor John Hills, professor of social policy at the London School of Economics, produced a report proposing a new definition of fuel poverty: the Low Income High Cost indicator. This said that a household would be fuel poor if fuel costs were above the national average, and were the household to spend that money, their costs would leave them below the poverty line.

Same names have attended Oxbridge for 800 years
Telegraph (Web), 30/10/2013, Unattributed
Family names which signalled poverty 150 years ago, such as Boorman, Defoe, Goodhill and Ledwell, also tend to remain low on the social scale, the team from the London School of Economic (LSE) concluded. The researchers, Dr Neil Cummins and Professor Gregory Clark, claim their findings suggest social mobility in England has not improved much since the Middle Ages, with people continually inheriting their status from their parents.
