Why Darcy and Percy always get to Oxford
Daily Mail, 30/10/2013, p.19, Steve Doughty
Among the poorer surnames, selected by researchers because they are relatively rare and the family line can more easily be traced, are Boorman, Cholmondley, Defoe, Goodhill, Ledwell, Rowthorn, Sidwells and Tonbridge. The researchers from the London School of Economics, Dr Neil Cummins and Professor Gregory Clark, said the name checks showed that social mobility in England is hardly greater than in medieval times and that people inherit their social status even more than they inherit their height.

Delay school until age seven, says Williams
The Daily Telegraph, 30/10/2013, p.12, Graeme Paton
The “Too Much, Too Soon” campaign – launched by the Save Childhood Movement – had previously been backed by 130 figures such as Sir Al Aynsley-Green, the former children’s commissioner for England; Lord Layard, director of the Well-being Programme at the London School of Economics; Dr David Whitebread, senior lecturer in psychology of education at Cambridge University, and Catherine Prisk, director of Play England.

Vicky Pryce: 'Prison clearly does not work'
The Guardian, 30/10/2013, p.10, Erwin James
Pryce came to Britain from her native Greece alone as a teenager and worked in hotel room service to pay for O- and A-level studies before gaining a scholarship to study at the LSE. Her career as an economist took her to the highest levels of government. In 2002 she became the first woman chief economic adviser at the Department of Trade and Industry and in 2007 became joint head of the government's economic service.

Youth unemployment 'crisis' warning
BBC (Web), 30/10/2013, Unattributed
Prof John van Reenan, director of the Centre for Economic Performance at the London School of Economics, says youth unemployment could affect the whole economy. "What happens is that young people who stay unemployed for a long period of time - it scars them," he says.

Lady Mary needn't worry - Britain's elite will survive
BBC (Web), 29/10/2013, Unattributed
But new research out today suggests inheritance laws and progressive taxation have actually done little to diminish the privilege and advantage of the ancient aristocracy. According to the paper from the LSE, a study of surnames over the past 800 years reveals "it takes at least half a millennium for the UK's elite class to shake off their lineage and converge with the average members of society - at least 400 years slower than economists had earlier predicted".

Over the top
The Economist (Web), 29/10/2013, Unattributed
Among other things, it would ban employers from running foreigner-only shifts. Nobody knows quite how many people live in Britain illegally. A plausible estimate by the London School of Economics in 2009 put the number at 618,000, around 70% of whom live in London.

School choice can end social segregation - the current system entrenches it
Spectator (Web), 29/10/2013, Unattributed
So choice already exists in Britain. What reformers wish to do is to extend this choice to those who cannot afford to go private, or move to leafy areas. The idea is to weaken the link between postcode and school quality, because parents can live in one area and choose a school in another. Evidence suggests this works. For example, in England, researchers from the LSE have recently shown that high-quality, publicly funded schools for which proximity isn’t an important admissions criterion have no impact on house prices at all.

Stop foreigners buying up so many homes in London, warns Lib-Dem
Evening Standard (Web), 29/10/2013, Nicholas Cecil
The Mayor’s office also defended overseas investment in housing but said Mr Johnson’s “greatest priority” was increasing the supply of housing for “hard working” Londoners. A spokeswoman said recent London School of Economics research showed only 6.5 per cent of house sales by value in London went to overseas buyers.

ULU officers vote to 'ban' themselves from remembrance services
The Independent (Web), 29/10/2013, Unattributed
The vote has infuriated various student groups, as well as Stella Creasy MP, who is an alumnus of the LSE. Ms Creasy, who is the Labour MP for Walthamstow, tweeted: “As a former student, this decision by ULU to ban officers from participating in Remembrance Sunday makes me ashamed.” Jay Stoll, meanwhile, the general secretary of LSE’s student union said in a letter to his university’s student paper that a “blanket ban” was “utterly absurd”.

Stella Creasy: my shame at university Poppy Day ban
Evening Standard (Web), 29/10/2013, Anna Davis
Ms Creasy, who is Labour MP for Walthamstow and studied at the London School of Economics, tweeted: “As a former student, this decision by ULU to ban officers from participating in Remembrance Sunday makes me ashamed.” Her tweet sparked an exchange with Michael Chessum, the president of ULU, who has refused to go to this year’s event. He has said he will commemorate the dead by “fighting for peace”.
