New NHS chief has his work cut out
The Guardian, 29/10/2013, p.35, Unattributed
Yes, as Polly Toynbee points out, the NHS has its problems (Pity the new NHS chief. He is in for a rude awakening, 25 October). But these should not be laid at the door of the Blair reforms to the service, in which the "new chief" Simon Stevens (and I) were closely involved….. Letter from Julian Le Grand, Professor of Social Policy, LSE.

Student union leaders boycott Remembrance Sunday service
The Daily Telegraph, 29/10/2013, p.11, Graeme Paton
Jay Stoll, general secretary of the London School of Economics Students’ Union, said in a letter to his university’s student newspaper that he owed “everything to those who made the ultimate sacrifice”. “Whilst clearly people are free to not attend such a service, putting a blanket ban on representatives attending in an official capacity is utterly absurd,” he said.

Student loans: what would Robbins do?
guardian.co.uk (Web), 28/10/2013, Unattributed
Ever tried filling out a student loan form? A simpler system would benefit students as much as better advice, says Gill Wyness, researcher in education policy at the London School of Economics and the liberal think tank CentreForum.

Economics students need to be taught more than neoclassical theory | Zach Ward-Perkins and Joe Earle
guardian.co.uk (Web), 28/10/2013, Zach Wardperkins Joe Earle
Economists using this mainstream economic theory failed to predict the crisis spectacularly. Even the Queen asked professors at LSE why nobody saw it coming. Now five years on, after a bank bailout costing hundreds of billions, unemployment peaking at 2.7 million and plummeting wages, economics syllabuses remain unchanged.

Richard Osman: 'I'd love to do a calendar of nude geeks'
Telegraph (Web), 28/10/2013, Glenda Cooper
He characterises his mother as someone “superbright, [who] knew the importance of a love of learning as opposed to passing an exam”. But her sons did that, too: as well as Richard ending up at Cambridge, Mat (who is the bassist with the Britpop band Suede) got a place at the London School of Economics.
