Eurozone fails to cheer recovery
Financial Times, 11/10/2013, p.6, Michael Steen
Paul de Grauwe, the Belgian economist and professor at the London School of Economics, believes the northern creditor countries have failed to offset the austerity forced on the southern debtor nations with budgetary stimulus in the north and debt forgiveness. “What is surprising is that [instead of protecting debtor nations] the European Commission has assumed the role of agent of the creditor nations in the eurozone, pushing austerity as the instrument to safeguard the interests of the creditor nations,” he says.

A debilitating problem that is still medicine's poor relation
The Times, 11/10/2013, p.2, Rosemary Bennett
However there is a long way to go before the charities compete with the likes of Cancer Research with its £480 million annual turnover. The London School of Economics sums it up: "The under-treatment of people with crippling mental illness is the most glaring cause of health inequality in our country."

Economic inequality: In sickness and in health
The Economist, 10/10/2013, Unattributed
No, argues Mr Deaton in the most controversial part of his book. He takes aim at global aid, arguing that with the exception of some health programmes it generally does more harm than good (a critique made long ago by Peter Bauer of the London School of Economics).

Can this Immigration Bill succeed where its predecessors failed?
Telegraph Blogs (Blog), 10/10/2013, p.1, Unattributed
We don’t have even a rough idea of the number of illegal immigrants. The only officially commissioned estimate, published in 2005, estimated the size of the illegally resident population at 430,000, based on census data from 2001. The London School of Economics, put the number higher at around 600,000, mostly living in the capital. Migration Watch UK estimate the illegal population at 1.1 million.

The Care Bill presents a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for disabled rights
New Statesman (Web), 10/10/2013, Unattributed
First, the London School of Economics estimates that 69,000 disabled people who need support to live independently don’t get it. Cash-strapped councils have been upping the bar for eligibility, with 83% of councils now setting the threshold at a higher level than they once did. Under the Government’s plans, all councils could set eligibility at the higher level. Experts say this will leave 105,000 disabled people outside of the system altogether. The Care Bill gives political leaders the chance to be take bold steps to reform the system.

The rise of the male plus-one (when women are the main event)
Telegraph (Web), 10/10/2013, Beverley Turner
In the 1970s, The London School of Economics wanted her husband, George Ackerlof, a heavyweight intellectual to come and wow their students. So in order to secure his services, they threw in a little job for the wife and let her do a little teaching of her own. Ackerlof was of course, no slouch but for several decades, Yellen (notably retaining her maiden name) existed in the wings, behind his more widely respected professional demeanour. Lord Meghnad Desai, who worked alongside Yellen at LSE said: “She was very undervalued at that time because we only thought of her as someone's wife. I found her very serious and a very bright person. She was solid, theoretical, in the mainstream – not flashy but very good. I could see that she felt she wasn’t getting her due.”
