London needs higher minimum wage, says report
Financial Times, 18/11/2013, p.4, James Pickford
The Centre for London’s idea has won support from economists such as Bridget Rosewell, former chief economic adviser to the Greater London Authority, and Alan Manning, a professor at the London School of Economics. It is also backed by the TUC.

HS2 is bad value, and that's a fact
The Sunday Telegraph, 17/11/2013, Henry Overman
I should start with an admission – I used to be an adviser to HS2 Ltd, and I am now an HS2 sceptic. This may not come as a surprise to anyone who saw my recent appearance in front of a Treasury select committee. I and other economists said that the headline-grabbing benefits of HS2 were essentially made up. I chose my words carefully, however. HS2 is not an awful project. That would be one where the costs exceeded any possible benefits.
Article by Henry Overman is professor of economic geography at the London School of Economics.

'Growth up!' But still no ovation for Cameron
The Observer, 17/11/2013, p.35, Toby Helm
Tony Travers, a professor of government at the London School of Economics, says previous attitudes and assumptions about economics were shaken so profoundly by the financial crisis of 2008 that people are unsurprisingly more suspicious these days about notions such as growth. "It was so traumatic and so widely felt over such a long time that itwill inevitably affect the way people feel about the government and economy for years to come," he said.

Don't allow a disaster to be a cash crisis £ !
The Independent On Sunday, 17/11/2013, p.66, Chiara Cavaglieri; Julian Knight
The London School of Economics has warned this offers no protection to the estimated 340,000 elderly people who pay for help in their own home. Furthermore, the cap will not include the "hotel costs" of a care home such as food, energy bills and the accommodation (set at £12,000 a year under the reforms). And people will only be able to defer the care costs if they have assets of less than £23,250 (excluding the value of their home).

The U.S. position is that "the opposition must negotiate with the regime and agree on a roadmap", said Fawaz Gerges, Middle East expert at the London School of Economics. "The Americans and the Europeans want to lock Assad into Geneva; it is a process without peace."

Time to end fuel poverty in Britain
Morning Star, 16/11/2013, Unattributed
The DECC commissioned Professor John Hills from the London School of Economics to examine the extent of "cold-related deaths" in Britain and he found that 27,000 people will die this winter as a result of continued exposure to fuel poverty. That figure is higher than the number killed on Britain's roads annually. The lack of conviction among Britain's political class when it comes to addressing this issue is appalling, and my party has been campaigning alongside other organisations to eradicate fuel poverty.

Viewpoints: UK trade v human rights
BBC (Web), 15/11/2013, Unattributed
William A Callahan, professor of International Relations, London School of Economics - "China is well-known for having a pragmatic approach to international relations. Since Deng Xiaoping launched the policy of economic reform and opening up to the outside world in 1979, Beijing has quite effectively separated economic issues from political ones in its international strategy. One could say that David Cameron is taking a Deng-ist approach to the UK's relations with China because his government now sees the People's Republic of China as an economic opportunity rather than as a human rights problem."
