Even a low 2:1 degree adds £2,000 to wages: That's £81,000 more over a 40 year career than someone with a 2:2
Daily Mail, 31/05/2013, p.42, Sarah Harris
Graduates who just scrape upper second class degrees earn over £2,000-a-year more in their first jobs than those who narrowly miss out on the threshold, new research claims. They achieve seven per cent extra in earnings six months after graduation than those who fall short of a 2:1 by just one mark. The study from the London School of Economics underlines the vital importance of university finals for subsequent earnings.

First¬class female graduates lag in extra earning potential
Financial Times, 31/05/2013, p.4, Norma Cohen
The research concludes that, on average, a first-class degree adds roughly 3 per cent to earnings in the first year of employment but, while male graduates are likely to earn 6 per cent more than counterparts receiving a 2:1, women gain no uplift at all. The study was carried out by two professors in the Centre for Economic Performance at the London School of Economics.

Pay gender gap for first-class graduates
The Times, 31/05/2013, p.3, Rhoda Buchanan
For men, burning the midnight oil while at university can end up being extremely lucrative. But not for women. Researchers at the Centre for Economic Performance analysed the exam marks of undergraduates at the London School of Economics and found that a first-class degree, as opposed to a 2:1, was worth about 6 per cent higher wages for men in their first jobs but made no difference to women.
Men can expect vast riches from a first, but women will see no benefit
The Independent, 31/05/2013, p.23, Richard Garner
Men can expect a massive pay boost during the lifetime if they get a first class honours degree from university - but women won’t earn an extra penny. These are the startling findings from new research from the Centre for Economic Performance, based at the London School of Economics, published today.

Good degree grade 'worth extra £2,000 a year in wages'
Daily Telegraph, 31/05/2013, p.14, Graeme Paton
Figures show that graduates entering the workplace with an upper-second or better will be paid an average of seven per cent more than those awarded a lower-second. Research by the London School of Economics revealed that the earnings premium attached to a 2:1 was twice that attached to a first-class degree. It also emerged that men were far more likely to convert top grades into high wages than women.

Women with first-class degree 'earn no extra money'
BBC (Web), 30/05/2013, Hannah Richardson
Women who get a first-class degree earn no more for their extra effort than those with a 2:1, a study suggests. The Centre for Economic Performance researchers say men who obtain firsts see their wages boosted by about 6% - an average £1,780 a year. But they cannot explain the gender gap.

Unpaid Yorkshire and Humber council tax totals £184m
BBC (Web), 30/05/2013, Unattributed
Tony Travers, a specialist in local government at the London School of Economics, said that while the level of outstanding council tax might be "shocking" to taxpayers it was "technically… not surprising". This was because it was easy for large debts to accumulate over a number of years especially across an area as large as Yorkshire and the Humber, he said.
