Unwanted side-effects
Times Higher Education, 30/05/2013, p.34, Matthew Reisz
This is only a single story, but it touches on far wider concerns that Parker has raised in a series of articles written with Tim Allen, professor of development anthropology at the London School of Economics. All examine programmes of mass drug administration (MDA) targeted at a rather diverse group of “neglected tropical diseases” (NTDs) that had traditionally received far less attention than the “big three”, malaria, tuberculosis and HIV/Aids, until the United Nations Millennium Project proposed a number of “quick win” interventions in 2005.

The difference between an ‘Attila’ and a ‘Desmond’? Two grand a year
Times Higher Education, 30/05/2013, p.6, Jack Grove
Graduates who scrape upper second-class degrees earn over £2,000 a year more in their first jobs than those who narrowly miss out on what is now a must-have for many employers. Researchers at the London School of Economics have found that graduates who just manage to achieve a 2:1 earn 7 per cent more on average than those who fall short by a single mark.

Chinese to develop slice of British imperial past
The Guardian, 30/05/2013, p.28, Jennifer Rankin
"We'll work with the employers that come, we'll understand what it is they're looking for. We will get the employers already in Newham and we'll get people into work." Prof Tony Travers of the London School of Economics said: "There is a perennial risk with a major new investment in east London or in any deprived area that it improves the area but doesn't improve the lives of people who are already there." Newham council, he added, had seen a lot of people get jobs at the Westfield Stratford shopping centre, but had benefited less from the Olympics.

We should worry about the revolving door for jobs
Financial Times, 30/05/2013, p.11, John Gapper
“Being able to put your case to a policy maker is a great source of advantage and that is what the clients buy. It does not mean they will succeed every time but it is far better than nothing,” says Jordi Blanes i Vidal, a lecturer at the London School of Economics, and one of the study’s authors. I doubt corruption is involved, in the sense of cash changing hands for public contracts. The UK civil service and US public bodies are not like tax and customs ministries in China, which party officials blatantly join to make money.

THE MAN WHO LOVES TO SUE BRITAIN ... ON LEGAL AID, OF COURSE
Daily Mail, 30/05/2013, p.7, Unattributed
Mr Shiner, 56, was a Birmingham University graduate who became an articled clerk and then a solicitor in the city. He worked for a decade for legal firms, a council estate project, a law centre and the Barnardo’s charity before founding his own firm in 1999. The father of five is also a visiting professor at London Metropolitan University, a visiting fellow at the London School of Economics, and was awarded the title ‘Human Rights Lawyer of the Year’ in 2004. He has repeatedly denied that he is an ‘ambulance chaser’ and calls the idea that he trawls for work‘ laughable’.

Silva surfer
Evening Standard, 29/05/2013, p.30, Amol Rajan
It was more than a decade ago that he left his native Wakefield — his parents emigrated from Sri Lanka in the Sixties — to read law at Manchester University. Many of his friends were heading there, and his mum told him to hold off going to London until he had some money. He later gained entry to the Treasury via the Civil Service fast stream but deferred for a year after winning a place at the LSE.
