Job applications: a foot in the door
The Times Online, 28/05/2013, p.1, Unattributed
Many key factors — notably academic results — are in place by the time applications are made. That is why, says Ben Perry, partner at Sullivan & Cromwell, academic consistency is important, including first-year grades. If spotless GCSE and A-level results are also required, then it’s no surprise that firms focus on the premier league universities — Oxford, Cambridge, Bristol, Durham, Manchester, Nottingham, Warwick and the London trio of King’s College, University College and the London School of Economics.

Britain and France force EU to lift embargo on supplying weapons to Syrian rebels
The Independent (Web), 28/05/2013, Unattributed
“In the west, we think somehow that a decision in Brussels would really shift the calculations of Assad: I think we're beyond this particular point,” said Fawaz Gerges, head of the Middle East Centre at the London School of Economics. “The question for the Syrian regime is not what Europe is doing, the question is the United States. As long as the United States remains reluctant to either intervene directly in the conflict militarily or arm the rebels, the regime believes that it can still deal with the rebels on its own terms.”

The university league table where Oxford and Cambridge don't come out on top: Students at Roehampton have the most sexual partners
Mail Online UK (Web), 28/05/2013, Leon Watson
Perhaps unsurprisingly, the more successful students from the 'red brick' universities did not fare too well in the sex table. Oxford came in 33rd place with a score of 4.17, Cambridge came 44th with 3.92 and LSE came 18th with 4.68. Studentbeans.com interviewed 6,653 UK university students via an online survey between April 21 and May 1.

Russia to deliver anti-aircraft missiles to Syria? live updates
guardian.co.uk (Web), 28/05/2013, Paul Owen
Russia and Iran will be keen to see Bashar al-Assad step down as soon as his seven-year term is up in 2014, according to Professor Fawaz Gerges, the director of the Middle East centre at the London School of Economics. He said that the way Russia and the United States viewed their proposed Syrian peace conference was “a matter of nine/eight months of negotiations”

Seven questions the Conservative Party needs to answer
New Statesman (Web), 28/05/2013, Unattributed
According to the London School of Economics report Recent Changes in Intergenerational Mobility in Britain, ‘the UK remains low in the international rankings of social mobility when compared with other advanced nations’. This is not a situation we can sit back and accept. Lady Thatcher’s legacy will be largely one of implementing policies that enabled social mobility, of encouraging people to get out there and improve their own lives.

Israel: We'll act if Russia gives missiles to Syria
NBCNews.com - Ian Johnston - May 28 at 15:38 BST
Fawaz A. Gerges, professor of Middle East politics and international relations at the London School of Economics, told BBC Radio 4 on Tuesday that Britain was looking to fill the “leadership vacuum” that exists because of U.S. reluctance to become more directly involved in the civil war in Syria.“There is no military solution to the conflict. Even if the opposition is armed, I doubt very much whether they would have the capacity to deliver a decisive blow against Assad and Hezbollah and Iran,” he told the station.
