Who wants to be a millionaire? 10% of us already are
The Guardian, 22/05/2013, p.13, Tom Clark
One British household in every 10 now has total assets exceeding £1m, according to a new book based on work at the London School of Economics published on Wednesday. Wealth in the UK crunched the findings from a comprehensive official survey that took place between 2008 and 2010, and found that 10% of households had total wealth of £967,200 or more. The lead author, Prof John Hills – who previously headed Whitehall's National Equality Panel – says a subsequent surge in stock markets, London house prices and the valuation of occupational pensions will "have pushed the entry point into that wealthiest tenth over the million-pound mark today".

South drives house price increase to 2004 levels
The Daily Telegraph, 22/05/2013, p.4, Rosie Murray-West

Bank was involved in EU bonus cap decision
The Times, 22/05/2013, p.39, Sam Coates
Meanwhile, a report by the London School of Economics yesterday revealed that bankers took a disproportionate share of the increase in earnings in the decade to 2008. The top 1 per cent of earners in Britain increased their share of the income pie by 2.9 percentage points, from 12.5 per cent to 15.4 per cent. Almost two thirds of this increase went to workers in the financial services sector, though they account for only one fifth of such high earners, according to the study by Brian Bell and John Van Reenen, of the LSE’s Centre for Economic Performance.

China offers fresh hope in global warming war
The Independent, 22/05/2013, p.26, Tom Bawden
“This is very exciting news,” said Lord Stern, chair of the Grantham Research Institute on Climate Change at the London School of Economics. “Such an important move should encourage all countries, and particularly the other large emitters such as the United States, to take stronger action on climate change. And it improves the prospects for a strong international treaty being agreed at the United Nations climate change summit in 2015,” added Lord Stern, who, in his 2006 report for the UK government on the financial implications of climate change, produced what many regard as the world's single most influential political document on the subject.

The Times, 22/05/2013, p.28, Robin Pagnamenta

Educated at the elite St Joseph’s convent school in Karachi, she studied at the LSE before working for the United Nations in New York. When she returned to her home city, she became a lecturer in international relations at Karachi university before entering politics, where she was working on the PTI’s education policy. Her husband, an Air Force officer and diplomat, died several years ago.

Financial Times, 22/05/2013, p.14, James Pickford

Leader: How to reform a society in which parentage dictates progress
New Statesman (Web), 21/05/2013, Unattributed
A 2010 study by the London School of Economics found that state school pupils were 4 per cent more likely to get a first-class or 2:1 degree than their privately educated counterparts. If fee-paying schools are to justify their charitable status and the tax breaks that follow, they should, as the Labour peer and former schools ministers Andrew Adonis has argued, be required at the very least to take on responsibility for the governance and leadership of state academies, and create partnerships with and opportunities for local schools, as indeed Eton has.
