It is time to set London free to tax and spend its own money
Financial Times, 16/05/2013, p.15, Tony Travers
The LFC's proposals are modest but could produce radical results. This is surely a reform worth making. The writer is a professor at the London School of Economics and was the chair of the London Finance Commission.

Johnson backs call to give London £12bn of taxes
Financial Times, 16/05/2013, p.4, Unattributed
Boris Johnson has thrown his weight behind a radical report that calls on the Treasury to hand control of £12bn in taxes to the capital. The London Finance Commission, chaired by Tony Travers, an academic at the London School of Economics, recommends the capital takes responsibility for “the full suite” of property taxes, including council tax, stamp duty land tax, business rates and capital gains tax on property disposals.

Boris: It's time for London to be treated like a grown-up on tax
Evening Standard, 15/05/2013, p.8, Pippa Crerar
The commission, chaired by Professor Tony Travers of the London School of Economics, called for London government to keep revenues from stamp duty and full business rates, in addition to the council tax receipts it already gets. This would result in the capital retaining 12 per cent of all tax raised here — up from five per cent. This would put it on more of a level pegging with cities such as Paris, Tokyo and New York.

Joblessness on the up as incomes are squeezed
The Times, 16/05/2013, p.41, Patrick Hosking; Kathryn Hopkins
The number of people in full-time employment increased by 10,000 to 21.68 million in the three months to March, while those working part-time fell 53,000 to 8.03 million. The number of self-employed people fell by 42,000 to 4.18 million. John Van Reenen, of the London School of Economics, said that the fact that more people were in work today than before the crisis began in 2008 was “misleading” as the numbers were boosted by the rising adult population.
WHAT'S THE VERDICT ON THE KING'S BABY?
The Independent, 16/05/2013, p.60, Ben Chu
In 12 February 1993 the Bank of England summoned journalists to a press conference to unveil something described as an "Inflation Report". This turned out to be a dense, but impressively clear, document laying out the central bank's forecasts for the path of prices and growth for the UK economy over the coming years. And, for the first time, the Bank tried to explain what economic judgments underpinned those forecasts. The press conference was chaired by a 45-year-old former London School of Economics academic called Mervyn King, who had been appointed as the Bank's chief economist in 1991.

Sir John Burgh
The Daily Telegraph, 16/05/2013, p.31, Unattributed
In 1946, after several false starts, he gained a place on an evening course at the London School of Economics, and the following year won a bursary to become a full-time student. In 1949 he was elected president of the student union. On leaving the LSE, Burgh joined the Civil Service, reasoning that, with his background, it was a good idea to work for the state. Although he recalled that his 30-year career in Whitehall had been “punctuated by constant attempts to leave it”, he found the job fascinating.

Ms Kellaway’s survey does, however, ignore another great British characteristic. In Brideshead Revisited, Cousin Jasper advises Charles Ryder upon his arrival at Oxford: “You want either a First or a Fourth. There is no value in anything in between.”Perhaps Ms Kellaway might consider a second survey on the value of those who scored a 2:2 or – heaven forbid – even worse. MAYOR SEEKS FINANCIAL 'DEVOLUTION'
Daily Express (Web), 15/05/2013, Unattributed
The commission was chaired by Professor Tony Travers, from the London School of Economics, who said: "London needs greater financial autonomy to drive growth and deliver better infrastructure. Wales and, in particular, Scotland are moving towards far greater discretion over taxes. London should be treated similarly. "Indeed, other cities in England could follow London down the route to greater financial accountability and self-determination. England is far too centralised and the London Finance Commission's pragmatic proposals would be a first step towards a more sensitive and popular democracy."

Report urges reform of council tax in London to boost economy
bbc.co.uk, 15/05/2013, Tim Donovan
In the introduction to the 90-page report, commission chairman Tony Travers, from the London School of Economics, says London "can't afford to stand still". The continuing dependence of the mayor and boroughs on priorities determined by central government was "not a good situation for a developed democracy," he says.

Boris Johnson's call for tax-raising powers for London boosted by report
guardian.co.uk, 15/05/2013, Haroon Siddique
The capital's government would also be responsible for setting council tax revaluations and banding, although Johnson was coy about the prospects of making changes in this area, which would likely prove unpopular with voters. Johnson also said he was not minded to introduce new taxes despite the commission, chaired by local government expert Tony Travers, raising the prospect of introducing tourism and environmental taxes.
