A better plan for London's airports
Financial Times, 14/05/2013, p.12, Unattributed
Expanding Heathrow is the worst solution, except for all the others. While residents would be asked to put up with more flights, there are ways to mitigate the extra noise. The best solution was presented by Tim Leunig, an economist at the London School of Economics, in a report last year. Mr Leunig recommends building four parallel runways immediately to the west of the existing two, which would be shut. Moving the runways would help to minimise noise levels over London since the aircraft would be higher as they approach their new landing spot. Because the areas to the west are less densely populated, few additional residents would be affected.

Betty Joseph Psychoanalyst and Klein disciple noted for treating the reluctant patient
The Independent, 14/05/2013, p.41, Daniel Pick
Born in Edgbaston in 1917, she was the second of three children in a secular Jewish family, her father an electrical engineer. She came to psychoanalysis via psychiatric social work. After studying and briefly working at the London School of Economics, analysis soon took pride of place. Joseph was sympathetic to communism, especially in her youth, but neither politics, literature nor ideology figured much in her writing, which was resolutely that of a clinician.

The ghost in the machine
Financial Times, 13/05/2013, p.4, Della Bradshaw
The cream of the business school alliances was undoubtedly UNext, which attracted top US schools such as Chicago, Columbia and Stanford, in addition to the London School of Economics. Quisic went with Kenan-Flagler and London Business School. But it all ended in tears. The dotcom bubble burst and fledgling companies were bought out by larger corporates or simply evaporated into thin air.
