Lower-grade foreign queue-jumpers a ‘myth’, data suggests
Times Higher Education, 02/05/2013, p.6, David Matthews
The long-standing suspicion that universities accept international students with weak qualifications to boost their income appears to be unfounded, according to research by Times Higher Education. At some institutions, such as the highly international London School of Economics, it is British students who have fewer tariff points…An LSE spokesman said that its entry standards were uniform across the board, but students who achieved them with the International Baccalaureate were rewarded with more Ucas tariff points than their peers with A levels, which explained the difference.

Please remain upstanding
Times Higher Education, 02/05/2013, p.32, Keith Richards
If something had gone wrong in North Korea, the LSE could have found itself legally and financially exposed. An LSE risk assessment would probably have involved robust negotiation with the BBC, and the insurance costs alone might have prohibited the subterfuge. The ethical position of the Panorama team relative to the group it exploited is questionable, and it is interesting to compare these cases from the news media with academic practice. How would Panorama have handled an Economic and Social Research Council ethical assessment given the people involved, the need for informed consent and the requirement to obtain the permission of the students’ “gatekeeper” (the LSE)?

Panorama put LSE ‘bystanders’ at risk

My mother shouldn't get free TV licence, says leading Conservative
The Daily Telegraph, 02/05/2013, p.4, Steven Swinford
He also said there needed to be "a pretty detailed examination" of the Panorama expose of life in North Korea and described its use of students from the London School of Economics as a cover as "highly risky". He said: "The fact you have the LSE, the Law Society, Universities UK all lining up against the BBC, it's quite a serious conflict and I was surprised the BBC don't look more anxious about it."

Getting used to a slower pace of growth in China
BBC (Web), 01/05/2013, Unattributed
In addition, my research with John Van Reenen of the London School of Economics shows that JVs (joint ventures) are 23% more productive on average than other firms. Those which had a technology transfer agreement that directly transferred advanced know-how from the foreign partner to the Chinese firm were 73% more productive. Since 15% of all firms were JVs during the 2000s, economic growth would have been 0.43% slower each year if China didn't have those more productive joint ventures.

North Korean 'court poet' to publish memoir
guardian.co.uk (Web), 01/05/2013, Daniel Kalder
Of course, North Korea is hot right now, courtesy of Kim Jong-un's statements about nuclear war. Indeed, Adam Johnson can probably thank Kim for the Pulitzer he won for his North Korea-set novel The Orphan Master's Son. Meanwhile, BBC reporter John Sweeney – not content with clashing with the LSE with his documentary on the hermit kingdom – has also written a (not yet published) book, Zombie Nation. Both authors made precisely one trip each to the country.

Endless growth will not deliver a healthy economy
guardian.co.uk (Web), 01/05/2013, Andrew Simms
Another report in April, by the LSE and thinktank Carbon Tracker, reminded us that to preserve a climate fit for civilisation we need to leave the great majority of fossil fuels in the ground. Even one of the oil company Shell's own advisers admits there are just two practical climate strategies: leave the carbon in the ground, or use it and put it back there – while admitting that the latter won't work, leaving really just one strategy.
