LSE in print

Professor William Letwin
The Times, 07/03/2013, p.57, William Letwin
He became Reader in Political Science at the London School of Economics in 1966 and was made Professor ten years later. It was a period when the LSE in many ways was living up to its reputation as a centre for Left-ish politics, but this obscured the reality of its contribution to traditional economics, notably after the appointment in 1948 of Michael Oakeshott as Professor of Political Science, in succession to Harold Laski (who had been a highly controversial chairman of the Labour Party when Labour swept to power in 1945). All this meant that Letwin could not help being conscious of the complexity of relations between politics and the academic establishment.

Four years on from stimulus plan - and nobody is celebrating
The Guardian, 07/03/2013, p.31, Phillip Inman
State-owned banks Royal Bank of Scotland and Lloyds were chiefly to blame after they more than offset an expansion in lending by Barclays and several building societies. Ros Altmann, a governor of the London School of Economics, reckons the strategy has failed in other ways. She has waged a campaign against the Bank of England's policies for several years, arguing they hand a benefit to people who are putting saving before spending.

Juncture interview: Bonnie Honig - Juncture
ippr (Web), 06/03/2013, Unattributed
Arendt worried that the political, as a concept, could disappear beneath the pressure of political science and philosophy. On this point, she dovetailed, rather improbably, with Michael Oakeshott, with whom I studied at the London School of Economics in the early ‘80s, before going to Johns Hopkins.

Goldsmith's friend in drugs arrest
Telegraph (Web), 06/03/2013, Unattributed
What’s the difference between the United Kingdom Independence Party and the British National Party? It’s hard to say, according to Ukip’s founder Dr Alan Sked. “Ukip, which I founded, has sadly become a new version of the BNP with a principal focus on immigration and Islam, as shown by its flagship 2010 policy to ban the burka and [the Ukip leader] Nigel Farage’s claim on Question Time that London’s housing shortage was due to council properties being given to migrants the day after they stepped off the plane,” says the London School of Economics boffin.
