Bankruptcy looms as Cyprus seeks to seal EU bailout
The Guardian, 01/03/2013, p. 35, Gwyn Topham
Widely respected in EU capitals and the US, Sarris oversaw Cyprus's entry to the eurozone during a previous stint as finance minister in 2008. In another deft move, the London School of Economics professor and Nobel laureate Christopher Pissarides has also been drafted to head a group of "wise men" advising the government on the economy.
Europe's Institutions Pose Counterweight To Voters' Wishes
The Wall Street Journal (Europe), 01/03/2013, p. 4, Matthew Dalton
The poor showing of Prime Minister Mario Monti in the Italian elections—his party won only about 10% of the vote—is the most serious challenge yet to the democratic legitimacy of the euro zone, said Paul De Grauwe, professor of European political economy at the London School of Economics. Pressure from euro-zone authorities helped to install Mr. Monti as prime minister, and he was a dutiful advocate of their policies.

Charlemagne: Rome’s bad spell
The Economist, 28/02/2013, p. 0, Marcin Hadaj
In truth Europe’s debate is not so much over whether fiscal rebalancing is needed but over how fast to do it. A new paper by Paul De Grauwe, a Belgian economist who is now at the London School of Economics, argues that panic has pushed some governments into unnecessarily deep austerity that has created more unemployment, greater poverty and political resentment over the “shackles imposed by the euro”. But even he accepts that belt-tightening is necessary in southern European countries.

House building: The lie of the land
The Economist, 28/02/2013, p. 0, Marcin Hadaj
This may increase building a little, but it will hardly be worth the political cost. It would be better to change the incentives to favour development. Henry Overman of the London School of Economics points to Germany, where local authorities that attract new residents get bigger grants and more tax revenue, as well as gains from giving planning permission. That ensures a steady supply of housing, even when prices are not rising.

New Statesman, 27/02/2013
The right-wing press is attempting to fool the public into believing that its opposition to green policies is based on robust evidence, rather than dogmatic ideology.

Exams score highly as teacher test
Financial Times, 01/03/2013, p. 2, Helen Warrell
The research, by the Sutton Trust social mobility charity and the London School of Economics, came as the government confirmed it would press ahead with performance-related pay for teachers – a move unions have strongly opposed.

John Gray interview: how an English academic become the worlds pre-eminent prophet of doom
Telegraph (Web), 28/02/2013, Unattributed
Up until 11 years ago, nothingness might have been most people’s reaction when asked if they’d heard of John Gray. He had a highly successful academic career – latterly as Professor of European Thought at the London School of Economics – and had written a great number of books.
