Desperate Cypriots hit back at Brussels 'blackmail'
The Sunday Times, 23/06/2013, p.9, Kiki Loizou
“The president is trying to conform to their requests to avoid forcing their hand to a second memorandum,” he said. He claimed a second bailout was not being discussed. “You can’t say it won’t happen because we didn’t think this haircut was a possibility. It’s something at the back of our minds but nobody mentions it.” Pissarides, a professor at the London School of Economics, has his cash stashed in the Bank of Cyprus. “My statement says they have taken 40% and frozen everything up to 90%. Only 10% is available.” He is in Cyprus for the next few months to chair a committee that will “look into how the banking sector should be operating”.
'Be positive' advice that sets parents up to fail
The Daily Telegraph, 22/06/2013, p.13, John Bingham
The so-called “positive parenting” approach which involves avoiding punishment or even criticism while constantly accentuating the positive can do more harm than good and simply “sets parents up to fail”, it concludes. In the study, published in the journal Ethics and Education, Helen Reece, an expert in family law at the London School of Economics, argues that the official obsession with being “nice” to children all of the time is “arduous, if not impossible” and can simply destroy the spontaneity of the parent-child relationship.

Peril of parents who praise too much
Daily Mail, 22/06/2013, p.5, Steve Doughty
Parents should be left to ‘trust their instincts’ free from the pressure of too much government advice, the London School of Economics analysis said. It condemned ministers’ guidance for mothers and fathers as ‘be nice parenting’ because it ‘sets parents up to fail’. The report, The Pitfalls Of Positive Parenting by barrister and LSE academic Helen Reece, challenges the assumption – promoted by the state for more than 20 years – that children should not be punished.

Give parents free rein on punishing children
Daily Express, 22/06/2013, p.2, Sarah Westcott
Government advice to parents to “be nice” is potentially damaging to their children, according to a study. The report from the London School of Economics says parents should rely on their own instincts instead. In the paper, published yesterday in the journal Ethics And Education, family law expert Helen Reece said the advice was setting up parents “to fail”.

Increasing deficit cuts right through the Chancellor's spin on Britain's economy

Also last week, a couple of my good friends, a present professor at the London School of Economics and a former one, received richly deserved knighthoods – Nobel laureate in economics Chris Pissarides and the chairman of the Migration Advisory Committee and external examiner on my PhD thesis, David Metcalf. This is two for the good guys.

Because of an editing error, we published a letter yesterday which appeared to have been co-signed by Richard Titmuss, the distinguished scholar of social policy who, of course, died in 1973. The letter was from Julian Le Grand, who is Richard Titmuss Professor of Social Policy at the London School of Economics. We apologise for the confusion.

The death of Helen Hughes at the age of 84 brought to an end a remarkable life, but also left Australia a formidable legacy. Born in Prague in 1928, she moved with her family to Australia in 1939, settling in Melbourne. Educated at Mac.Robertson Girls’ High School and Melbourne University, Helen earned a doctorate from the London School of Economics and went on to become Australia’s most eminent female economist, working for various universities and institutions at home and abroad. Her achievements are many and well-documented.
