LSE in print

Diary
The Guardian, 14/06/2013, p.37, Hugh Muir
But Euroscepticism is a broad church, and many see danger in efforts by Professor Alan Sked, the now bitterly estranged founder of Ukip, to found a centre-left sceptic party. Perhaps this explains events at a debate on One Nation Britain hosted by LSE's Institute of Public Affairs on Wednesday evening. Sked, who was debating with Labour's Jon Cruddas, Tory David Davis and human rights expert Francesca Klug, surprised the audience by beaming on to the screen above the words democraticselfgovernment@gmail.com, the email address for his fledgling group.

I've got no time for page three, but a blanket ban would be pointless
The Daily Telegraph, 14/06/2013, p.24, Isabel Hardman
There are others who also think The Sun should be banned from all decent establishments until it realises the error of its ways. Some student unions, including Newcastle, Sheffield and the LSE have dropped it from their shops.

Southeast Asia Leaders Seek New Curbs
The Wall Street Journal (Europe), 14/06/2013, p.12, Chun Han Wong
What the balance should be between freedom of expression and security is an open and contested question,'' said Robin Mansell, a new-media and Internet professor at the London School of Economics. "Traditions are clearly different in countries in Southeast Asia but the question is similar." In Singapore, more than 1,000 people protested Saturday against the new Internet laws”

THE SMART MONEY'S ON A FEMALE FOR THE FED
The Independent, 14/06/2013, p.58, Nikhil Kumar
No one would be able to question her credentials – besides heading the San Francisco branch of the Fed, she is a former chair of the Council of Economic Advisers, has taught at Harvard and the University of California at Berkeley, and in the late Seventies was a member of the London School of Economics faculty – while the Obama administration would be able to claim credit for naming the first woman to lead a major central bank.

Families' incomes set back by a decade
The Daily Telegraph, 14/06/2013, p.4, John Bingham
It follows a report by the Institute for Fiscal Studies this week which showed that workers have suffered “unprecedented” wage cuts since the 2008 financial crisis but, unlike in previous recessions, kept their jobs. “This is unprecedented in post war recessions,” said Prof John Van Reenen, director of Centre of Economic Performance at the London School of Economics. “There have been a lot more pay freezes than in the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s recessions and so price inflation has eroded real pay. “Weaker unions and more pressure on unemployed to find jobs have made wages more flexible.”

Statistically speaking, politicians place too much faith in figures
The Daily Telegraph, 14/06/2013, p.22, Fraser Nelson
On a visit to the London School of Economics, the Queen once asked a very good question about the crash: why did no one see it coming? The answer is depressingly simple: because the economic tools don’t really work. Human life is too complicated to be sliced, diced, quantified and predicted.
