Students who become interns stand out in the graduate jobs market
The Daily Telegraph, 13/06/2013, p.8, Graeme Paton
In total, students in Britain will make an average of 7.1 job applications by the end of their course, compared with 5.7 a few years ago, it emerged. At one university – the London School of Economics – students had made more than 11 job applications each. The disclosure – in a study by High Fliers Research – underlines the importance of standing out in the jobs market. It comes weeks after research by the London School of Economics found that students with a good degree – a 2:1 or better – earned at least £2,000 a year more than classmates who narrowly gained a 2:2.

FOREIGN EXCHANGE RATES 'RIGGED' BY CITY TRADERS
The Daily Mirror, 13/06/2013, p.2, Graham Hiscott
In a statement the ¬Financial Conduct Authority said: “The FCA is aware of these allegations and has been speaking to the ¬relevant parties. “We cannot comment further at this time.” Tim Kirchmaier of the London School of Economics said the exchange rate benchmark is vital. He explained: “The price mechanism is the anchor of our entire economic system. “Any rigging of the price leads to the misallocation of capital and is extremely costly to society.”

Eric Schmidt, Google chairman, is among those who has observed the UK is “where inventions are born, but not bred for long-term success”. Geoffrey Owen, of the LSE, said such criticism was not always justified, citing innovation by companies such as GlaxoSmithKline and Rolls-Royce.

Yet his background is, apart from his schooling, remarkably similar to that of Letwin. Both sets of parents were north London Jewish intellectuals, both fathers were academics at the London School of Economics, and both Bill and Shirley Letwins’ and Ralph and Marion Milibands’ homes were meeting places for literary and political figures.

Silencing of broadcaster ERT shocks Greece
BBC (Web), 12/06/2013, Unattributed
Elias Mossialos, a professor of health policy at the London School of Economics, was the minister of state who in 2011 presented the Pasok-led government's plan to reorganise Greece's public service broadcasters. He also says the current government had already "had one year to reform ERT and did nothing". "ERT should be made fully independent, its staff evaluated by a third-party organisation, and the restructuring must be supervised by a bipartisan committee - not by the same minister who appointed a constituent of his to ERT or gave a TV programme to an ND politician's daughter."

ippr (Web), 13/06/2013, Unattributed
This will require you and the chancellor to work together, not to try to shuffle responsibility on to each other. You could both start by taking the advice of others, such as Adam Posen, who has called for aggressive action to boost both private and public investment; Angus Armstrong, here at the NIESR, who has put forward radical proposals for reform of the UK mortgage market; and the London School of Economics’ Growth Commission, which has pointed to years of inadequate investment in skills, infrastructure and innovation.

Hezbollah tips Syria power balance
Reuters UK (Web), 12/06/2013, Samia Nakhoul
Sunday's killing of the protester in Beirut added to the list of grievances against Hezbollah among Lebanese, who once revered it as a resistance force above domestic politics. "What we're seeing is very dangerous: Armed clashes, the weakening of the state, the killing of a protester. It's low intensity warfare," said Fawaz Gerges, Professor of Middle Eastern Politics at the London School of Economics.
