But for the Russell Group as a whole, it is a mixed picture. For the first time since 2010, two of its members have managed to break into the top 20, with Exeter placed 13th and Newcastle 15th. Bristol (23rd) and London School of Economics (22nd) also received firsts. But six were awarded fails or thirds: Oxford (fail), Cambridge, Imperial College, Liverpool, Warwick and York (all thirds).

Three boroughs sign 'radical' outsourcing deal
Financial Times, 11/06/2013, p.4, Gill Plimmer
Eric Pickles, local government minister, hopes it will provide a model for other local authorities, which are struggling with 28 per cent cuts to their budgets over the four years to 2014-15. Tony Travers, a professor at the London School of Economics, said: “This is a big contract and evidence of the enormous financial pressure the authorities are under. It suggests this group is willing to be very radical in delivering low-cost services.”

Of capital and revenues
Financial Times, 11/06/2013, p.4, James Pickford
Mr Johnson last year set up the London Finance Commission, an independent body chaired by Tony Travers, a London expert at the London School of Economics and Political Science, to help improve the tax and public spending arrangements for the capital in order to promote jobs and growth. The Commission’s conclusions – presented last month and endorsed by Mr Johnson as well as London Councils, the body representing the capital’s 33 local authorities – were to pursue a radical grab for control over the “full suite” of property tax revenue streams

Minimising risk can reduce legal burden
The Times, 11/06/2013, p.4 (Raconteur Supplement), Rachel Fielding
However, Professor Michael Power, director of the Centre for the Analysis of Risk and Regulation at the London School of Economics, believes that highly formalised governance in response to regulation can actually be counterproductive. “It can create new risks as it distracts key actors from what matters,” he says.
