Exercise could trim GBP257m off NHS cost
Daily Express, 10/06/2013, p.22, Sarah O'grady
The report, 12 Minutes More..., by charity Nuffi eld Health and the London School of Economics, analysed data from the annual Health Survey for England. It found a 70 per cent of British adults do not meet the target of five 30-minute exercise sessions a week, with the average person exercising just four days a month.

Professor of doom is 'waiting for the next crisis'
Financial Times, 10/06/2013, p.4, David Oakley
His opening remark, in response to a question on whether the financial crisis is over, sums up his pessimistic mood and sets the tone for the rest of the interview. “I don’t think so,” he says. “It’s the continuation of a chronic illness, which comes to acute phases from time to time.” Indeed, in a keynote speech at Russell Investments’ annual pensions conference in London last Wednesday, the London School of Economics professor and Financial Times columnist warned the world was “waiting for the next crisis”, which he fears will involve the eurozone again.

In Britain, a haven for academic refugees
International Herald Tribune, 10/06/2013, p.14, D.d. Guttenplan
Founded in May 1933 by William Beveridge, head of the London School of Economics, the council eventually rescued hundreds of German scholars. It found them places in British universities so they could continue their research and teaching and, in many cases, provided them with small grants to enable them to survive. After Einstein’s speech, members of the staff at the London School of Economics agreed to donate a percentage of their salaries to support their refugee colleagues.

Treasury smooths path for Help to Buy
The Sunday Times, 09/06/2013, p.2, Kathryn Cooper
A leading economist has warned that the plan, under which the Treasury will underwrite up to £130bn of lending, could be “more risky” than America’s Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, the state-sponsored mortgage institutions that had to be nationalised in 2008. “In the UK scheme, the government takes a hit in the event of a major housing crisis far more quickly than under the American system before the crisis,” said Christian Hilber of the London School of Economics.

The Independent, 08/06/2013, p.30, Matthew Bell
Rabbatts left school at 16 with a handful of O-levels, but later took evening classes to complete her A-levels, and got a place at the London School of Economics. She joined the bar and became a barrister, aged 26, a job she loved. So why did she give it up?

THE OTHER POWER IN DOWNING STREET
Financial Times, 08/06/2013, p.22, Sarah Neville; Kiran Stacey
His accent still bears traces of a northern upbringing, while his straightforward manner lacks the calculated urbanity of mandarin caricature. He read history and economics at Hertford College, Oxford, later taking a masters at the London School of Economics. In between he joined the elite ranks of the fast-stream civil service – but in the decidedly sluggish backwater of the Health and Safety Executive.
