What Peter Oborne doesn't get
New Statesman, 25/07/2013, p.18, David Blanchflower
Let’s place his comments in context. The MB apparently spoke with Tony Travers, who, he argued, is from the “respectable” part of the London School of Economics, even though he is not a member of the permanent faculty. I am wondering whether he thinks my distinguished friends Tim Besley, John Van Reenen, the Nobel laureate Christopher Pissarides, Nick Stern and John Hills are from the “respectable” bit. Or Richard Layard, or David Metcalf?

Gold standard too high for politicians
Financial Times, 26/07/2013, p.10, Unattributed
Sir, Writer and co-founder of the London School of Economics, George Bernard Shaw, was born on July 26 in 1856. His quotation regarding governments and gold may amuse your readers. He wrote: “You have to choose, as a voter, between trusting to the natural stability of gold and the natural stability and intelligence of the members of the government. And with due respect to these gentlemen, I advise you, as long as the capitalist system lasts, to vote for gold.”

Home improvement for those with poor health saves hospitals money
guardian.co.uk (Web), 25/07/2013, Unattributed
Adaptations effectively pay for themselves while taking pressure off our already stretched health service. A report published last year by the London School of Economics highlighted an example of one London borough that had two wheelchair users in residential care due to the condition of their homes. Adapting the properties and making them fit for purpose saved £30,000 per client.

Here’s how the Tories want to stop Ukip. And it’s not pretty
Telegraph (Web), 25/07/2013, Tim Wigmore
A simple technical change to the voting in the European elections could be another. It sounds boring – but could be the Tories’ best answer to Ukip yet. A new LSE study suggests that the Conservatives could achieve a five per cent gain – and Ukip a six per cent fall – at a legislative stroke. Changing from a closed-list to an open-list voting system, allowing voters to choose specific Conservative candidates who matched their Euroscepticism, might be enough to keep the Tories ahead of Ukip next year.
