Blue-chip dirty tricks 'bigger than phone hacking'
The Independent, 25/07/2013, p.1, Tom Harper
Professor Charlie Beckett, London School of Economics: "I find it difficult to accept that this should be kept secret, and I’m encouraged by Keith Vaz’s remarks. I cannot understand why we shouldn’t know which companies hired private investigators that break the law. We know which media organisations commissioned them and I can’t quite see what the difference is here.”

The English question demands an answer
The Daily Telegraph, 25/07/2013, p.19, Sue Cameron
Professor Tony Travers of the London School of Economics says it’s a “no-brainer” for the Tories to insist on English votes for English laws, noting that Labour is dying out in the southern English shires just as the Tories have all but disappeared from Scotland. “Next year we are going to see the backwash of the Scottish independence debate flowing into English politics,” he says. “This will have a profound effect on the power of England and thus of the UK.”

Legacy team still has mountain to climb to revitalise east London
Financial Times, 25/07/2013, p.2, James Pickford
The boroughs bordering the Olympic site face deep-seated economic challenges. Anne Power, professor of social policy at the London School of Economics and Politics, said three of them – Hackney, Tower Hamlets and Newham – sit near the top in national measures of deprivation. “They are all under a lot of pressure from immigration, low skills, high unemployment and the legacy of ex-industrial land,” she said.

There are better gauges of economic health than clumsy GDP
Financial Times, 25/07/2013, p.9, Richard Lambert
It was for all these reasons that the London School of Economics Growth Commission, of which I was a member, argued that GDP was an inadequate performance measure and should be supplemented with a broader indicator of economic wellbeing – ideally tracking median household incomes, which provide a rough way of reflecting what people receive out of national income. Since it represents the middle of the income distribution, the median gives a good indication of the living standard of the typical household.

Plans to tackle blight of 'nuisance calls'
Telegraph (Web), 24/07/2013, Daniel Johnson
A recent study by the London School of Economics found that complaints about cold calls have trebled over the last two years to nearly 460 a day. Not only are current rules stacked in favour of spammers, the LSE said, but it called for changes to the rules designed to protect customers, nearly 60 per cent of whom say they no longer want to answer their telephone.
