Why Britain needs its little cities to grow up
The Daily Telegraph, 19/07/2013, p.19, Jeremy Warner
A recent paper by Henry Overman, director of the spatial and economics research centre (SERC) at the London School of Economics, argues convincingly that the problem of Britain’s regional divide is not that London is too big – it’s a mere tiddler compared to Shanghai, for example – but that many regional cities are too small, or sub-scale.

MILLIONS of Brits don't answer their home phone after being plagued by cold callers, says a study by the London School of Economics.
Open data: Mining Leviathan
The Economist, 18/07/2013, Unattributed
Michael Best and Henrik Kleven of the London School of Economics have analysed stamp duty records for all 10m property transactions in Britain between 2004 and 2012. They focus on “notches” where taxes jump, like the one between a house sale of £250,000 ($378,000) which is taxed at 1%, and a sale of £250,001, taxed at 3%.

Charlie and the aspiration factory
The Economist, 18/07/2013, Unattributed
A possible reason for the sympathetic tone is that upward mobility can no longer be taken for granted. In 2011 researchers at the London School of Economics concluded that intergenerational social mobility, assessed by income for children born between 1970 and 2000, had stalled. Another study, by Essex University academics, found matters had not improved during the slump.

Mishal Husain and communalism
The Guardian, 19/07/2013, p.35, Unattributed
Ignoring the old guard of John Humphrys and James Naughtie, half of the new Today team are products of the top-three rated universities – Cambridge (Husain), Oxford (Evan Davis) and LSE (Justin Webb). Sarah Montague could "only" manage to graduate from Bristol (15 in the current rankings). It strikes me that where you went to university may be rather more significant than which set of genitals you happen to be born with. - Jo Lynch, Liskeard, Cornwall

Battle in Bermuda
The Independent, 19/07/2013, p.58, Gideon Spanier
The company’s circular to shareholders pointed out that Mr Asher attended Harvard Business School with Mr Shull, and that Mr Asher has links with Mr Bell and Mr Dimmock because Tower Resources interviewed them both for the chief executive’s job last year. Mr Asher also went to the London School of Economics at the same time as Mark Denning, a senior figure at Capital.

G4S outsourcing report leaves biggest question unanswered
guardian.co.uk (Web), 18/07/2013, David Walker
And yet they may still be facing a moment of vulnerability, even danger – at least in balance sheet terms. If £1 in £3 of public service spending now goes through contractors, you see ratios of up to 75% in contractors' dependence on the state (not just UK central government of course). Tony Travers of the London School of Economics calls them 'para-statal', not so different from arm's length bodies or quangos.

Unique transgender archive sent to Canadian university after offer to LSE is rebuffed
Camden New Journal, 18/07/2013
Professor Ekins, of Tavistock Place, Bloomsbury, offered it to the London School of Economics’ LGBT Hall-Carpenter Archive, but was told it would not be accepted because of a lack of an inventory listing what it contained. He instead has negotiated for it to go to the University of Victoria in Canada, which paid for its transportation and inventory.
