Leading universities 'must go private to stay in global race'
The Times, 29/01/2013, p.8, Greg Hurst
Lord Baker, who remains closely involved with further and higher education, predicted that several Russell Group universities would choose to go private under such terms. The London School of Economics was the most likely candidate, he said. It has the highest proportion of overseas undergraduates and the least dependence on teaching grants. International students are charged twice the fee levied on British and EU undergraduates at the LSE. From the autumn this will be £15,768.

Stanley Cohen
The Guardian, 29/01/2013, p.29, Laurie Taylor
It was a concern that led him into active conflict with the apartheid regime in his native South Africa; a concern that led him, during his time at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem (1981-95), to lead a major inquiry into the Israeli army's use of torture in the occupied territories; a concern that led him to play a central role in the establishment in 2000 of the Centre for the Study of Human Rights at the London School of Economics, where he was professor of sociology (1995-2005).

Spend more without risk, says Nobel laureate
The Daily Telegraph, 29/01/2013, p.4, Philip Aldrick
Christopher Pissarides, a professor at the London School of Economics who jointly won the celebrated award in 2010, said the Government could avoid a big increase in the deficit by offsetting borrowing for major road, energy or transport projects against expected tax revenue from the new jobs and economic prosperity they would deliver.

It's time to switch off your mobile and set yourself free
The Daily Telegraph, 29/01/2013, p.21, Max Davidson
Insights Team, as it is formally known, emerged common sense so beautiful and bracing that it was like being nudged by Marilyn Monroe. Suppose, asks Prof Paul Dolan of the London School of Economics, a former stalwart of the unit, a man who nudges for England, happiness is not owning the latest, smartest mobile phone, but is, in fact, having….

? SIX in 10 people hardly [...]
Daily Express, 29/01/2013, p.16, Peter Hillby
cent don't mix with people from their area. Another depressing study. The reason is partly the growth of me, me, me but also smart phones. Prof Paul Dolan, of the London School of Economics, thinks the constant use of these devices stops people relating to others around them and we would all be happier if we turned the damned things….

Proposals to allow councils to raise local taxes rejected by Eric Pickles
guardian.co.uk (Web), 29/01/2013, Patrick Wintour
Tony Travers, the London School of Economics director of London government and an expert on local government finance is quoted by the committee: "Local taxation has been made so perceptible and unpopular that it will surely remain capped for the foreseeable future. The tax base is impossible to revalue. In short, council tax is dying."

Today we remember Lincoln as a great redeemer ? and that should give Obama hope
New Statesman (Web), 28/01/2013, Mehdi Hasan
But is the Hollywood take on Lincoln – emancipator of the slaves, assuager of America’s racist past – the whole story? In a scathing letter to the Daily Telegraph on 12 January, the LSE historian Alan Sked wrote: “Abraham Lincoln was a racist who . . . had no intention of freeing slaves who freed themselves by fleeing to Unionist lines . . . Until the day he died, Lincoln’s ideal solution to the problem of blacks was to ‘colonise’ them back to Africa or the tropics.”

Are smart cities the answer to rising populations?
guardian.co.uk (Web), 28/01/2013, Tim Smedley
At LSE Cities, Philipp Rode, executive director and senior research fellow, argues that there is nothing new about "new cities". "Brasilia [built in 1956] is probably the most extreme, but also Islamabad, Chandigarh ... Whereas what we're talking about today is mostly extensions of existing cities. The question is much more about when do you build on greenfield versus when do you use existing urban structure? I would argue it should be a priority to build on existing urban land rather than developing new."

Want to be happy? Just switch off your phone, says expert
Mail Online UK (Web), 28/01/2013, Amanda Williams
The secret to happiness lies in turning off your mobile phone and concentrating on your friends and family rather than text messages and emails, an expert on happiness has said. Professor Paul Dolan, of the London School of Economics, believes that the popularity of iPhones and other smart phones has seen people constantly having their attention drawn away from their nearest and dearest and to the devices instead.

But Max Nathan, a economic geographer at the London School of Economics, challenged some of Mr Cameron’s claims. “It will help the cities on the line but I am quite sceptical about whether HS2 will close the north-south divide.”
