The advice from an expert on happiness: switch off your phone
The Daily Telegraph, 28/01/2013, p.5, Matthew Bayley
Professor Paul Dolan, of the London School of Economics, warned that the popularity of smartphones meant that users were constantly having their attention drawn to the devices rather than to the people around them.

The Facebook fugitive
Daily Mail (Scotland)*, 28/01/2013, p.25, Gavin Madeley
The source said: 'It's unclear whether he is able to get his hands on lots of cash.' Dr James Ker-Lindsay of the London School of Economics said Voudouri was 'stuck but safe', adding: 'It is very difficult for other countries to enter into any relations with the Turkish Cypriot authorities because there….

Lib Dems seek housing boom
The Sunday Times, 27/01/2013, p.2, Marie Woolf; David Smith
The Growth Commission of the London School of Economics will call for more investment in infrastructure and skills and for Britain to improve its record on innovation. Many British inventions have been more successfully exploited by other countries. The commission’s report is not intended as a “plan B” for the government after figures on Friday showed the economy shrank by 0.3% in the final quarter of last year and was flat in 2012 as a whole.

BUILDING A BRITAIN TO TAKE ON THE WORLD
The Sunday Times, 27/01/2013, p.20, Unattributed
This government’s legacy will be defined by two things: how it steers the economy from crisis back to prosperity and how it determines Britain’s relationship with Europe. They are closely related. This week will see a report by experts assembled for the Growth Commission of the London School of Economics. Its members include Lord Browne, Lord Stern, Sir Richard Lambert and Rachel Lomax, as well as its co-chairmen professors Tim Besley and John Van Reenen.

We don't need no grandiose education
The Sunday Times, 27/01/2013, p.23, Peter Lampl
Research by the London School of Economics for the trust shows that English schools could move into the world’s top five education performers within a decade if the performance of the least effective 10% of teachers were brought up to the average.

They are only human ...
The Sunday Times, 27/01/2013, p.2, Hannah Prevett
Simon Ashby is an associate professor at Plymouth University who is doing research at the London School of Economics on the risk culture in financial institutions. He agrees that acknowledging the role of employees is vital to a comprehensive risk management strategy. “An organisation’s people are the single biggest cause of risk,” he said.

THE UNDERCOVER ECONOMIST: What price a top state school?
Financial Times, 26/01/2013, p.52, Unattributed
“A link between better schools and higher house prices is one of the most stable empirical regularities worldwide,” writes the economist Steve Gibbons in Centrepiece, a magazine published by the LSE’s Centre for Economic Performance. His colleague Stephen Machin has published a more academic review of the literature, reaching much the same conclusion: the ability to send your children to one of the best schools rather than one of the worst will add 15 to 20 per cent to the value of your home. (Internationally, estimates range from about 5 per cent to 40 per cent.)

Should you spy on your child's texts?
The Times, 26/01/2013, p.8, Anna Moore
Perhaps sneaking a peek at your children’s phones and looking at their browsing history when they’ve gone to bed might not be such a bad idea. “Maybe Claire Perry’s comments will make more parents aware that there’s a problem here and that we should sit up and take notice,” says Professor Sonia Livingstone of the London School of Economics, who is also the director of EU Kids Online and serves on the UK’s Council for Child Internet Safety. “A lot of parents don’t know what images are on their children’s phones — and in the case of porn they sort of don’t want to know because they don’t know exactly how to deal with it.’’

Arthur Collis
The Guardian, 26/01/2013, p.39, Peter Baird
Arthur won a scholarship to the London School of Economics in 1947, where he studied sociology and economics. He then spent six years in Cardiff as deputy children's officer for Glamorgan until he was appointed lecturer in social policy and social administration at the University of Birmingham in 1956.
