Academies overpaid in Whitehall funding blunder
Financial Times, 10/01/2013, p.3, Chris Cook
But schools that now become academies do not get a management change nor are they failing. Stephen Machin, a professor at LSE who led the research on the original academies, said it “may be, in due course, that these new academies do deliver performance improvements. But we know nothing of this yet”.

Arthur Collis, 1916-2012
Times Higher Education, 10/01/2013, Unattributed
Only after the war was he able to begin his academic career, securing a scholarship at the London School of Economics and Political Science to read economics and sociology. This enabled Professor Collis to pursue what became a lifelong interest in childcare and social work and led to a powerful polemic, co-authored with Vera Poole, titled These Our Children (1950).

Once again, Labour is sticking its head in the sand and hoping the welfare debate goes away
Telegraph (Web), 09/01/2013, Dan Hodges
Its own critique of the stigmatisation of those on benefits was undermined by an attempt to shift emphasis onto the “strivers” rather than the “shirkers” condemned by Liam Byrne at the LSE last year. And the whole sorry saga ended with the bizarre spectacle of David Miliband standing up in the Commons chamber and outflanking his brother and the rest of the Labour front bench from the Left.
