LSE in print

You'll need own currency if you go it alone, says top economist
The Times (Scotland)*, 21/02/2013, p.5, Peter Jones
The risk of people and companies moving their bank accounts out of Scotland in the first days of independence mean that the Scottish government will have to develop a Scottish currency, a leading economist and former adviser to Alex Salmond has warned. John Kay, a professor of economics at the London School of Economics and the University of Oxford, added that a Scottish currency is also necessary if a future independent government is to have full freedom to change tax rates under independence.

Economist pans SNP hopes for the pound
Daily Express (Scotland)*, 21/02/2013, p.2, Paul Gilbride
Economist John Kay will say today that the EU will not hand over a share of the £3.6billion rebate, worth roughly £300 million a year to Scotland. The visiting Professor of Economics at the LSE, will also warn in a lecture at Glasgow University today that taxation and spending constraints put on a separate Scotland by the Bank of England as part of a deal to keep the pound would be unworkable.

Salmond adviser says separate state can't keep pound
The Daily Telegraph (Scotland)*, 21/02/2013, p.15, Simon Johnson
Prof Kay will use a lecture at Glasgow University today to argue that the “currency issue is crucial” and agree that Scotland should keep the pound. “But it would be difficult to negotiate an agreement that would be consistent with the fiscal freedom sought through independence,” the visiting economics professor at the London School of Economics will warn. “Scotland should be ready to adopt an independent currency, Market expectations would begin to force events from the day a yes vote was obtained.”

Stress and poor pay sends singer back to the office
Financial Times, 21/02/2013, p.3, Dina Medland
The French horn vied later with keyboard and the school choir for his attention, but it was in his last year of an economics degree at the London School of Economics that he faced stark choices. He applied for graduate jobs in marketing with fast-moving consumer goods companies, and also successfully to the Royal Academy of Music.

European University Institute's renaissance thinking
Times Higher Education Supplement, p.20 21/02/2013, Jack Grove
Although English is the lingua franca of its classrooms, the EUI's "stateless" nature makes it particularly welcoming to new staff and students, Cremona argues. "Even a highly international institution like the London School of Economics is still a UK institution and foreign students are hosted by the UK. Here, there are no hosts and no guests," she says.

LSE online

Scots 'should consider own currency'
BBC (Web), 21/02/2013, Unattributed
"Market expectations would begin to force events from the day a Yes vote was obtained." Prof Kay, a visiting professor at the London School of Economics and a fellow of St John's College, Oxford will say that, in the event of independence, oil revenues would be "split on a formula strongly favourable to Scotland". Yet he will add that, with higher levels of public spending per person in Scotland, the overall position will "at least initially, be little different from the present".

From where I sit - 'Brexit'? It's cold outside
Times Higher Education Supplement (Web), 21/02/2013, Anne Corbett
While the rest of Europe, with its many world-class universities, strengthens the cooperative Bologna strategy for mobility and the circulation of ideas, my email correspondence suggests that bright minds are already rejecting the pricey British option and its "Little England" aura. Some of them have taken their academic potential to Spain, Slovenia, France, Finland, Croatia, Luxembourg or the Netherlands instead of Oxbridge. Two of them are Chinese.
