Miliband's rise from unbelievable poverty to challenge toffs
The Daily Telegraph, 14/02/2013, p.4, Michael Deacon
Born in 1969, Mr Miliband grew up in the working-class Yorkshire mining town of Primrose Hill. Throughout little Ed’s childhood, his father Ralph toiled for scant reward in one dead-end job after another: lecturer in political science at the London School of Economics, professor of politics at the University of Leeds, acclaimed author.

Over to you, Chancellor ...
Daily Mail, 14/02/2013, p.75, Ruth Sunderland
In his Budget next month Osborne, who has so far come up only with an unconvincing ‘March of the Makers’, needs to produce much more compelling measures to promote growth including targeted tax cuts to support research and innovation. He should also heed the London School of Economics growth commission’s recommendation for an independent infrastructure strategy board.

Spain's economy: Rajoy unconfined?
The Economist (Web), 13/02/2013, Unattributed
A new paper by Luis Garicano (a panellist at the event) and Claudia Steinwender of the London School of Economics looks at the impact of financial constraints on firms. By comparing Spanish firms that are foreign owned, and therefore have access to other forms of financing, to those that are domestic, and are therefore reliant on local banks, the authors can see what uncertainty about financial access did to their decision-making before and after the 2008 crisis.
