Leaning on high earners for equality
International Herald Tribune, 08/02/2013, p.2, Chrystia Freeland
When it comes to the growth of the superrich, the tabloids may have gotten it right. The numbers tell the story. The numbers tell the story. According to a study by John Van Reenen of the London School of Economics and Brian Bell of Oxford University, the share of national income earned by the top 1 percent in the United States surged to 18.3 percent in 2007, from 8 percent in 1979. In Britain, the trend was almost identical: The top 1 percent received 15.4 percent of the national income in 2007 compared with 5.9 percent in 1979.

A case to reconsider the basis of monetary policy
Financial Times, 08/02/2013, p.11, Martin Wolf
“This is most obvious if one considers a popular alternative: a shift to targeting nominal gross domestic product. Yet, as Charles Goodhart of the London School of Economics and co-authors note in a recent paper, this attractive idea has drawbacks: the target is far less transparent than prices; the data are not only published quarterly, but are constantly revised.

Incentive for UK schools to promote talent
FT.com (Web), 07/02/2013, Unattributed
“This will tell us whether schools have served their pupils well. There is, of course, more to school policy than accountability. The recent LSE Growth Commission, for example, also called for more freedoms for schools and better support for children from poorer backgrounds. We have already allowed far more schools than ever before…”
